Born On This Day: Dennis Hare (1946–2024)

On this day in 1946, Dennis Hare was born in Glendale, California, an artist who spent decades pushing figuration into something rawer and more physical than the canvas usually allows.

Hare came to painting late, after years as a nationally ranked beach volleyball champion, and taught himself the craft by studying the masters directly in museums. Working within the Bay Area Figurative tradition, he built his surfaces thick, layering oil paint with scraps of fabric, newspaper, and other weathered found objects until the materials themselves carried as much meaning as the image.

Hare described his subjects as things “simple, imperfect, humble”, and painted with an instinct for the human moments most artists smooth over.

His work is held in the collection of the Crocker Art Museum, alongside numerous private collections across the country.

☎️New Arrivals by Pamela Carroll

A vintage rotary phone. A hand-painted pot. A little bit magic... Two new still lifes from Pamela Carroll just arrived at the gallery.

Both oil on panel. Both here now. Stop by downtown Carmel and see them in person!

A longtime Carmel-by-the-Sea artist, Carroll has a gift for making everyday objects feel worth a second look. In 2006, First Lady Laura Bush invited her to illustrate the White House Christmas Program.

Born On This Day: Joan Savo (1918–1992)

On this day in 1918, Joan Savo was born in Portland, Oregon, a painter who would go on to help define figurative expressionism on the Monterey Peninsula.

She found her voice in San Francisco’s North Beach art scene before eventually settling in Pacific Grove. Savo painted almost every day, three or four hours at a stretch, chasing what she called “vitality” in a piece, and wasn’t afraid to paint over a canvas that felt too safe or too serious. Her figures, deeply human and quietly dramatic, drew comparisons to the David Park school of painting, though Savo made the style entirely her own, softening her figures with shadow and illusion.

Her work lives on in the permanent collections of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Oakland Museum, and the Monterey Museum of Art, among others.

Featured paintings:
1. S.C., n.d., oil on canvas, 29 1/2 × 27 1/2 in
2. Untitled, 1978, oil on canvas, 47 × 46 in
3. Untitled, 1980, oil on canvas, 72 × 60 in

We’re happy to announce that Winfield Gallery now represents painter Tim Kennedy💙 Tim Kennedy

Kennedy’s still lifes are painted directly from life, capturing the world as he actually sees it. Of his process, he says: “Essentially, you’re watching how light falls on things.”

Kennedy earned his BFA from Carnegie Mellon and his MFA from Brooklyn College. He’s received grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Clark Hulings Fund, and his work has been reviewed in The New York Sun and the Indianapolis Star. He taught painting at Indiana University Bloomington for over two decades before retiring in 2024.

A quiet interior study by California realist David G. Hines, “Two Tables” pairs two humble tables against a wall, illuminated by a carefully placed source of warm light, one bare, the other draped in deep red velvet.

Painted in oil on linen with the smooth, luminous surface Hines is known for.

Hines earned his BFA and MFA in painting from the University of New Mexico and has shown widely across California and New Mexico.

Ben Tuna | Now Showing at Winfield Gallery

These two striking mixed-media works by Los Angeles–based stained glass artist Ben Tuna are crafted from reclaimed car doors, their windows replaced with hand-cut fragments of antique stained glass salvaged from decommissioned churches.

The contrast between weathered steel and luminous glass creates a beautiful tension between the sacred and the industrial. Look closely, and you’ll find angelic figures, imagery more commonly found in a cathedral than on a car door.
