Extensive displays of Civil War relics from the local battlefields of South Mountain, Antietam and Harper's Ferry, including personal items of Confederate Officer Henry Kyd Douglas. Rare books and documents

Large collection of fi****ms, from tiny watch fob pistols to canons weighing nearly a ton; over 500 edged weapons from around the world. Antique china and glassware

Indian artifacts from North, Central and South America, including stone weapons, pottery, beadwork, and a cane that was carved by Chief Geronimo. A collection of lighting devices that span 2000 years - from Roman pottery oil lamps to Art Nouveau electric lighting. Ancient artifacts including a Roman bronze safety pin ca. 100 b.c., an Egyptian mummy statue, and rare Chinese stirrups from the T'ang Dynasty. Recreations of a Cabinetmaker's Shop of 1860 and a 19th Century General Store with displays of dolls, toys and authentic old-time merchandise.

*Sneak Peek: A Civil War Story We’ve Been Uncovering

The research began with something surprisingly simple. While taking a photograph of sketches for one of our social media posts, we wanted to make sure the information we were preparing to share was accurate. We ran the image through Google, expecting to simply confirm the caption.

The sketches themselves are not new to the Boonsborough Museum of History. They have been hanging on our museum walls for years. What is new is the story we are uncovering behind them.

The sketches are the work of Charles F. Allgower, a soldier and artist who served with the 6th New York Infantry, known as Wilson’s Zouaves (later the 5th Infantry, Corps d’Afrique, a regiment redesignated as the 77th United States Colored Infantry.

As we began researching we discovered that they include scenes associated with Fort Pickens and Santa Rosa Island, Pensacola Bay, Fort Barrancas, Pensacola, and later Bayou Boeuf, Louisiana places that closely follow the movements of Allgower and his regiment during the Civil War.

And then we made another fascinating discovery


One of the sketches, “Navy Yard on Fire — Jan. 1, 1862, 11 o’clock AM,” was reproduced in Harper’s Weekly on February 8, 1862.

For now, we're sharing just a small sneak peek of what we have uncovered.

The original sketches are now safely preserved in archival collections, but the Boonsborough Museum of History is working to bring their story back to the public through reproductions and research.

We are planning a special future program where we will showcase the collection, explore each sketch, and tell the remarkable story of Charles F. Allgower and his journey through the Civil War. As our research has continued, we have uncovered a fascinating lead that may help explain how these sketches eventually made their way to the Boonsborough Museum of History.
