Boonsboro Trolley Station Museum

Boonsboro Trolley Station Museum The last surviving purpose-built trolley station in Washington County, Maryland. The station served the Hagerstown & Frederick Ry. until 1938.

Today the station houses a museum covering the history of the town and the railway. Open 2nd and 4th Sundays, 1-4pm, May - October

Dedicated September 12, 2009. New exhibits now open for 2023!

We have made the difficult decision to cancel the May 2nd Plein Air event in Boonsboro due to insufficient artist registrations. (After all, what is an art event without several artists involved?)

We plan to try this event again in the future. It is a great opportunity to capture the beauty of our area and raise support for our organization.

The National Road Heritage Foundation and its two museums operate primarily by donations from supporters like you. Consider making a donation to our organization. Your donation not only helps us keep our museums open every week, but also allows us to expand our programs, local activities, and extend our reach as we grow across the entire Historic National Road in Maryland, increasing appreciation and respect for America's first federally funded roadway and tourism to the many communities which call it their Main Street!

The National Road Museum has several community activities in the works in the next couple of months.

May 2nd - Plein Air Art Event - Artists of any experience or skill level are invited to come support the National Road Museum and spend a day painting scenes around downtown Boonsboro and Shafer Park. There is a small fee to register as an artist and we will provide the canvas.

May 30th - National Road Yard Sale at the Museum. We will be hosting a community yard sale on the museum grounds. Donation to the museum requested from those who register for space that day. We will also have items on sale benefiting the museum itself. Any art donated to the museum after the Plein Air event will be auctioned during the month ending at noon on the 30th as well.

If you are planning to hold a yard sale of your own in the Boonsboro area between May 27th and 31st, you can use the same registration form to let us know so we can add you to a list we will be promoting that week.
Learn more and find the links to register for these events at https://Nationalrdfoundation.org/events

More events and programs are in the works. Stay tuned!

As we enter our second summer, we are also seeking additional volunteers for our two museums! Self-paced training provided, no experience or prior knowledge necessary. https://nationalrdfoundation.org/volunteer to learn more.

We will be CLOSED this weekend due to the extreme cold.

Let's be honest...with no insulation in the trolley station you really don't want to visit us this weekend anyway, right? Be safe and we will see you soon!

With forecasted wind chills in the negatives, we have made the difficult decision to close tomorrow for the safety of our visitors and volunteers.

Please stay safe and warm this weekend and then come visit us next weekend for Hoops Meet History, when the Boonsboro Boys JV and Varsity players will be helping to give tours on February 14th!

01/24/2026

The National Road Museum will be open today from 11-3.

Due to the extreme cold, the Boonsboro Trolley Station Museum will not be available today for the safety of our visitors and volunteers. That building has no insulation or climate control.

The National Road Museum, of which we are a part of the tour, has announced winter hours for this year!

Please note that if you want to visit the trolley station, be prepared for The inside of our building to be as cold or sometimes even colder than outside. Despite being restored, the trolley station is an as-built historic structure, and has no insulation or central heating. We do run a heater in the waiting room over the winter while we are open, but it does not warm the entire building.

With the holiday season approaching, do we have a gift for you?! The National Road Museum and Boonsboro Visitor Center will remain open through the winter!

After this coming weekend, our new hours will be Saturdays 11am to 3pm.

A visit to our museum makes a great educational indoor activity! Fancy a road trip this winter when the roads are clear? The National Road offers wonderful views during periods of fall foliage and snowcover alike, and any time in the wintertime when the leaves are off of the trees you can see some spectacular views!

Follow us here for inclement weather closings and event updates. Please note that while Trolley Station Museum tours will be available, that facility is not climate controlled and can be very chilly at times. We'll keep the National Road Museum comfortable for you, however.

Interested in being a volunteer? The winter months are a great time to join our team!

As we pass the one-month anniversary of our opening, we would once again like to thank our founding donors, without whom we would not have been able to open our doors.

For a suggested donation admission fee our guests are welcome to tour both the National Road Museum and neighboring Boonsboro Trolley Station Museum .
