Doctor On Call: Discussion with Dr. Alla Shapiro

Join the Augusta Jewish Museum and JCCFA Augusta for a special conversation with Dr. Alla Shapiro, a pediatric physician and first responder to the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

Dr. Shapiro will share her firsthand experiences witnessing the devastating effects of radiation exposure, government misinformation, and the risks faced by emergency responders. She will also discuss her journey to the United States and her work as a leading expert in medical countermeasures for radiological and nuclear emergencies.

The Augusta Jewish Museum mourns the passing of Nancy Glaser, Executive Director of the Augusta Museum of History.

Nancy was a tremendous friend and supporter of the Augusta Jewish Museum and played an instrumental role in helping establish our Museum. Her dedication to preserving and sharing Augusta’s history, and her belief in the importance of telling the stories of all who have shaped our community, made an enduring impact on our institution.

Her knowledge, leadership, generosity, and unwavering commitment to Augusta’s history will be deeply missed. We are profoundly grateful for the role she played in helping bring the Augusta Jewish Museum to life and for the lasting legacy she leaves in our community.

Our hearts are with Nancy’s family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Augusta Museum of History community during this difficult time.

Bring a friend and celebrate International Day of Friendship by visiting the museum! We are open till 4:00 pm!

Today is International Day of Friendship. Anne Frank had many friends, and before she went into hiding, she spent a lot of time with them. They went on outings, shared hobbies, and created memories that would later become very meaningful.

This photo comes from an album that Anne Frank (at least partly) put together during the period when she was in hiding. It shows Anne Frank, Tineke van der Willigen Gatsonides, Sanne and Barbara Ledermann.

The photo was taken in the summer of 1941. Anne was staying with her friend Sanne Ledermann and her family at the Kaempfers’ home in Beekbergen. The Kaempfers were relatives of the Ledermann family.

I am the new Archivist for the Augusta Jewish Museum and came across this gem of a photo. It was not labeled, so I'm not sure what the event was or the date. Maybe someone out there can fill us in and if you know any of the names, that would be a big help.
This is the interior of the Congregation Children of Israel Synagogue on Telfair St., the oldest standing Synagogue in the State of Georgia and one of the oldest in the US. It was saved from becoming a parking lot by a group of Augusta citizens led by Jack Steinberg OBM. After the Synagogue was deconsecrated, it was sold to a private firm who added a second floor and used it for office space. Later, the City of Augusta housed their IT department there. Much work went into stripping out all the additions for the two floors. The steel beams had to be cut up to be removed.
Process will begin soon to return the Synagogue to its former glory as a Cultural Center, like
Sacred Heart Cultural Center is today.
Please stop by the Augusta Jewish Museum located in the old Court of Ordinary building at 525 Telfair St., between City Hall and the Synagogue. Hours are 11-4, Monday - Saturday and 1-4 on Sundays. Private tours outside of those hours are available by request.
