A wonderful interview with Mabrie Ormes, featured artist at Art and Soul Ashland this October.
Ormes began as a black and white photographer, then explored printmaking, large scale figurative drawing and oil painting, plein air work, (and more!) and most recently, jazz music inspired sculptures.
Her ‘clusters’ series explores the idea of looking at one subject from several points of view. The clusters include an array of plein air oil paintings of plants and perspectives in her garden. When explaining the idea behind clusters, Ormes says, “It’s just kind of to get practice! We need practice in welcoming other points of view as a way of knowing more about anything.”
With the support of The Haines & Friends Visual Arts Grant Program she created her Women Authors project, highlighting a series of women authors who were famous in their time but have been forgotten. Ormes creates a portrait of each author - there are 18 in the series and more to come!
