Hanson Howard Gallery is Ashland’s oldest gallery, representing contemporary northwest artists since 1979. Working in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, ceramics, and original prints, our artists represent a diversity of styles ranging from landscapes to abstraction. We feature monthly exhibitions and participate each month in the Ashland Gallery Association’s First Friday Art Walk.

Visit us at 89 Oak Street, just one block north of the Shakespeare Theater Campus. Judy Howard established Hanson Howard Gallery in 1979 and has been joined by several partners over the years. In 2015, Élan Chardin joined Judy and currently they represent over thirty five artists.

Last Chance :: Millie Whipplesmith Plank

Celebrating biodiversity and the preservation of open spaces, rich colors, simple shapes, and the nostalgia of traditional woodblock printmaking can be seen in Millie's work. Informed by her cattle ranching heritage, she always finds herself becoming involved in a conversation between the wood and her imagery, resulting in unique textures and very spontaneous lines.

Last Chance :: Elizabeth Arzani

As an interdisciplinary assembler, Elizabeth constructs narratives from moments of curiosity, absurdity, and potential humor in happenstance. Her impulse to collect and her desire to recycle is a search for connection and an attempt to collaborate with the unknown. As a result, stories are told in the cracks and creases, stains and rust of physical objects, layered with her own mark making.

Last Chance to View :: Jon Jay Cruson

Beginning in the 1970s as a lithographer, Jon shifted to painting and has never looked back. His stylized shapes, patterns, and colors are the result of much time spent studying the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. While remaining representational, Jon’s paintings tend toward the abstract, a double pull that is one source of the creative tension in his work. Planes and perspectives shift in impossible ways, while colors and patterns add a playful layer of complexity.

Artist Spotlight :: Stacey Dressen McQueen

Stacey Dressen McQueen's very small and intricate acrylic paintings are a meditative practice of mark making and color that approach the overlapping, separating, and tangled patterns of relating. In addition to creating paintings, she also illustrates a variety of picture books. To see more of her latest work, please take a look at our website at www.hansonhowardgallery.com.

Happy Monday!

New Work :: Karen Staal

Specializing in a contemporary style of the human figure, Karen's main purpose in painting is to achieve a spatial harmony that is satisfying to view. Rather than depicting people exactly as they are, instead, she interprets them by creating new harmonies with line, shape, and color. More recently, Karen has been experimenting with abstraction and loose brush strokes while continuing to incorporate the human figure.

To see up close, stop by the gallery this week. We're open Wednesday through Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Oregon Art Beat :: Olga Volchkova

In Olga's paintings, she modernizes traditional icons by paying homage to her passion for both botanicals and plants. Growing up in Russia, she was one of eight lucky artists to attend the first school of Traditional Icon Painting. Discovering that each step in the painting process must look balanced and harmonious, she now uses this knowledge to create visual narratives that explore the mythologies that humans have crafted while expertly rendering her subject's forms.
