Founded in 1989, the Elizabeth Myers Mitchell Art Museum is one of only five art museums in Maryland accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The museum is located in Annapolis, the state's capital, and is part of St. John’s College is the third oldest college in the United States and is known as one of the country’s premier liberal arts colleges due to its distinctive Great Books curriculum. Undergraduate and graduate students read more than 200 classic texts across dozens of subjects and discuss them with faculty in small, seminar-style classes. The museum's program, inspired by the college's distinct learning culture, has been recently reenvisioned as a place to ask pertinent and urgent questions about the human experience through art and with extraordinary artists. All its exhibitions and most of its events are free and open to the public.

On Saturday, November 7, please join /m and our Manager of Artistic Inquiry, Jenny Cawood, as we embark on an all-day educational field trip through Glenstone Museum!

The theme of this trip is “Voices of Nature” 🍁

We will be discussing such questions as: “Does the natural world help us identify those values that are most important about humanity? Does it help us be better people? To find our voices and speak (through art or otherwise)? How loud do we need to be to be heard?”

Our hope is that, after dealing with these questions and engaging with the grounds & artwork at Glenstone, our experience of /m’s current exhibition, Miguel Braceli: Unburial, will be deepened.

Tickets are free and lunch will be provided at the Museum café.

However, space is limited to 20 people – to sign up, send an email to [email protected]. Please note that this trip is offered to SJC polity members only.

A short itinerary: we will all drive up together on the day of the trip. We will meet in the FSK Lobby at 8am that day, depart by bus at 8:30 a.m., arrive to Glenstone at 10 a.m., have lunch around noon, and stay at the museum until 4 p.m. We will then get back to Annapolis by 5:30 p.m.

About the Destination: Glenstone is a world-renowned private museum and outdoor sculpture park in Potomac Maryland, about 45 miles from Annapolis.

We look forward to sharing this incredible experience with you!

All polity members are invited to RSVP.

Opening this Saturday: “Surveilled or Seen: Sinew of Trust in the Video of Marina Abramović and Lynda Benglis”

In the VIDEODROME, /m’s recently launched media space, /m is presenting historic videos by two pioneering artists. Each work explores what it costs us to trust each other — and how important it is that we do.

What is the difference between being looked at versus being witnessed? Between being invasively surveilled versus deeply seen? These questions emerge as we watch the two exhibited videos—Abramović’s Rest Energy (1980) and Lynda Benglis’ Monitor (1999)—unfold.

We are invited to sit with how much social cynicism deteriorates us, if we allow it to take over and transform our will to trust into one to control. As an antidote to this, each artist seems to posit that we must instead relinquish control if we hope to be loved. Love, then, becomes indistinguishable from the act of choosing not to monitor someone fearfully, but to witness them vulnerably.

It is a terrifying and brave, humbling and life-giving choice. We hope watching these works of art help it become easier to make.

Funding for this project was provided by Laura Ricciardelli and David Watt, and the Arts Council for Anne Arundel County.

We extend our thanks to Abramović LLC and EAI for their collaboration on this project.

This exhibition was curated by Jenny Cawood, /m Manager of Artistic Inquiry.

The Mitchell Art Museum will open two exhibitions to the public this Saturday, 9/12 — “Miguel Braceli: Unburial” will occupy the main gallery of the museum, as well as some outdoors space.

Stay tuned for our next posts, which will detail opening reception information (❗️) and reveal the exhibition which will be in our “Videodrome”, the museum’s dedicated video art gallery.

About the exhibition:

Join us as we ponder the meaning of the Annapolis Liberty Tree, which was felled in 1999 after lording over St. John’s College’s front lawn for more than three centuries. A witness tree, it was the site of meetings of the Sons of Liberty prior to the revolution. More recently, it was the backdrop for scores of graduations.

Today, amid the 250th anniversary of the United States, what should we make of the tree’s absence? Is this a time to reconsider our notions of liberty? These questions are central to Braceli’s project, though the question he has chosen to pose is more poetic and enigmatic: “Can you whisper to me, the last breath of a tree?”

This project takes the form of a temporary outdoor sculpture on the college’s front lawn, and a related installation in the main gallery. This fall, stay tuned for a series of community-driven “whisper conversations” inside the installation.

We can’t wait to speak with you about these pieces and welcome you back to the museum.

Presented in collaboration with Annapolis Pride, Historic Annapolis, and the Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs.

Thank you to the Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area and the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority for their generous support of this project.

Jenny Cawood, the Curator of Videodrome Exhibitions, will begin this discussion with an opening question, in the tradition of the St. John’s Seminar. Please come prepared to ask questions, listen to your peers, and analyze these texts in relation to the video works on view.

Dear SJC Seniors,

This is a reminder to submit your work for the 2026 Baird Prize!

🎨

The Walter S. Baird Prize is awarded annually to a graduating senior for excellence in the arts, humanities, or sciences.

Similar to last year, the prize will be awarded to the creator of a single work that incorporates ideas from two or more disciplines in a compelling way.

The work itself can take any form. It could be, for example: an animation, cartoon, ceramic, dance performance, drawing, essay, film or video, graphic novel, lecture, musical composition, math proof, model, opera, painting, photograph, performance, play, poem, or sculpture, to name a few possibilities.

The award is named after Walter S. Baird (1908-1982). A man of many talents and interests, Baird founded the Baird Corporation in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1936. The company was a worldwide leader in the development and manufacture of spectrographs and other scientific instruments.

📝 We invite you to submit an existing work by April 27th for consideration and, accompanying your work, explain how it aligns with the goals of the grant.

The winner will be announced at Commencement, will be listed in the program, and will receive a generous cash award.

You can drop off your submission at the Mitchell Art Museum during their open hours: Thursday, Saturday, Sunday from 10am-6pm; Fridays from 2-7:30pm.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

The /m Team
