We'll admit this was not what we expected, nor hoped, to see when the Wilma Lee was lifted out of the water a few weeks ago.

We love that we are able to provide public access to the Chesapeake Bay by way of our piers and beachside park at the Museum Campus. However, we ask those that fish and crab from our piers to kindly dispose of their lines appropriately to help prevent this type of build-up. Not just for our historic skipjack, but also all boats that visit our Museum Campus.

When schools are closed, send your kids to AMM for a day of hands-on outdoor exploration, games, experiments, and crafts! https://amaritime.org/education/camps/schools-out-camp/

On January 18th, kids will be wowed with a fun-filled day of experiments. Campers will be amazed as we write secret messages in code, create an explosion, brew some slime, and much more. We will round out the day with plenty of outdoor time and science-inspired art.

It's not too late to make a difference in 2020

The end of a very challenging year is just around the corner, but 2020 isn't over yet. We truly need your help to reach our ambitious year-end goal. https://amaritime.org/support/donate/

You may think your donation is just a drop in the bucket, but it is vital to our success. A Washington D.C. source estimated that as many as 30% of museums across the nation may remain permanently closed. The AMM is working diligently to not be included in that statistic and your donation will aid that effort.

As we close out the year, we are reflecting on the resiliency and resourcefulness from everyone. We are reminded of the extraordinary value of community and how we rally together to lift one another up. This year, we've been wowed by the continuous and generous support we've received.

We are looking forward to 2021, especially the opportunities to continue our mission and engage with our community.

In the meantime, we hope this holiday season offers you and yours good health and the opportunity for connection.

Thank you for all your support this year! We are deeply grateful for the entire AMM community.

Happy Holidays!

Check out the history of the Oyster Wars Cannon that now calls our Museum home!

#oysterwars #maryland #annapolis

Today marks the tenth anniversary of Maryland DNR’s acquisition of the Dahlgren Light Boat Howitzer originally purchased in 1868 by the State Oyster Police Force. It has come to be known today as the Oyster Wars Cannon and has been promoting DNR and Natural Resources Police history ever since. The effort to bring the cannon back into State hands began in August of 2007 when an email to DNR was forwarded to the NRP historian and administrator of this page. That original email was sent by the Commander of the American Legion in Reisterstown, MD, who was the current owner of the cannon. For the next three years, conversations, letters and emails generated widespread support for having the cannon returned to DNR. Appraisals of value were made, offers were tendered, funds were provided and contracts were written. Then, on December 16, 2010, a check was presented to the Legion and the cannon started a journey home and on the road.
The cannon was first equipped with better wheels and displayed at the DNR headquarters in Annapolis. It later went on display at several maritime related museums around the State. Included in those venues were the Delmarva Discovery Center, Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, Calvert Marine Museum, Havre de Grace Maritime Museum, Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center, Baltimore Inner Harbor Visitor Center and several other places. It spent some of the time between those locations at the Maryland Conservation Agency Museum in Boonsboro, MD, where it was filmed for an episode of Chesapeake Collectibles on Maryland Public Television. It is now featured in the new exhibits at the Annapolis Maritime Museum where it should remain for many years to come.
