Last week, seventy 5th grade students from the Monarch Academy in Glen Burnie participated in a virtual erosion lesson with Assistant Education Director, Katey Nelson. We love engaging with our students and hearing their feedback on lessons.

"Thank you Katey Nelson, for teaching us all about erosion and how we can stop it in our neighborhood and how we can show other people and in time helping the earth."

"Thank you for your time and thanks for teaching ME something new! I really enjoyed the video and I enjoyed getting to go outside and doing the challenge! Thank you!"

Fun Fact Friday!

Heller’s Boat Yard is where Eastport’s famed boat building industry began. On this site, in 1868, a German immigrant named Wilhelm Heller began crafting fine wooden boats. His reputation spread and business flourished. Heller’s became the largest boatyard on Spa Creek, serving both commercial fishing boats and pleasure craft.

We regret to announce that the 2020 Tides & Tunes Summer Concert Series is cancelled. Concerns due to COVID-19 have led to its cancellation. Gatherings of large groups are prohibited for the foreseeable future. For the health and safety of all guests and the community, this cancellation is not only the right thing to do, it is mandatory per state law.

We remain hopeful about the Boatyard Beach Bash scheduled for August 29th and the September Sunsets Concert Series scheduled at the Museum’s Park Campus – stay tuned.

Thank you to all the bands who were scheduled to perform!

Fun Fact Friday

Harry E. Lewis was a waterman who eventually purchased the land where the Tecumseh condo buildings stand today. The Lewis Boat Yard mainly serviced watermen’s boats and leased boats out to watermen who could not afford to own their own vessels. Lewis was also the founder of the Eastport Democratic Club.

Happy #NationalMaritimeDay! We've got a fun fact Friday for you too.

Fathom it: In the old days of sailing vessels, soundings were made by lowering a lead weight on hemp line. As the line was retrieved, it was measured with outstretched arms. Today the expression "can't fathom it" means that we don't understand or can't work it out or, closer to the origination, we can't find the depth of the meaning in something. 1 fathom = 6’

Fun Fact Friday

During his lifetime Herbie Sadler was a waterman and taught many young men in Eastport the ways of the water - how to oyster, crab and fish. Shortly after the war, Herbie and his wife bought the property at the foot of Third Street and Spa Creek. Sadler’s Seafood became a staple in the Eastport neighborhood of Annapolis.

Annapolis Gelcoat & Restoration helping us keep the Wilma Lee in tip top shape! Our 80 year old historic skipjack requires a fair amount of dedication and love.

Proud to help preserve a bit of history. Helped with the Wilma Lee SkipJack. A true living classroom used in part to help teach the ways of the old watermen on the Chesapeake Bay.

We were happy to contribute historical photos to this project. Beautiful video! #WeAreAnnapolis

Now more than ever it is important to remember times when Annapolis has braved adversity by coming together as a community. We are proud of our city and if we’ve learned anything from the past, it’s that we will come out of this even stronger. Thank you to everyone who came together and helped Symmetry and Drawn to the Image make this project successful. #WeAreAnnapolis

Fun Fact Friday

America, a historic 101-ft. gaff-rigged schooner was the first winner of the America's Cup international sailing trophy in 1851. By 1940, she was laid on the ways at the Annapolis Yacht Yard in Eastport to be restored. On March 29, 1942, the temporary shed protecting the historic yacht, collapsed under the weight of a two-foot snowfall.

At the AMM we know Box of Rain is a wonderful program, but our participants say it best:

"We really enjoyed that Mr. Marco takes the time to make it all about the children and how we feel, think, what we want in this program, the LOVE that he shows and gives to us, making sure that everyone is safe and comfortable, making sure that no one is hungry, always keeping smiles on everyone's faces and most of all, always encouraging us to learn and have fun. We love Box of Rain, Box of Rain is love and we are a family in Box of Rain." - program participant testimonial
