Anna Maria Island Historical Society

Anna Maria Island Historical Society Museum Located at 402 Pine Avenue in Anna Maria. FREE Island Trolley AMIHS Munzee and GeoCache site
A visit to the Anna Maria Island Historical Complex is a trip back into Florida history. The Island has a vast and rich history beginning with its earliest times as an Indian fishing camp, to the arrival of the Spanish in 1530, to the Island’s first homesteader George Emerson Bean in 1893 and his son Wilhelm’s development of the first tract of land along with “Fig Newton” inventor Charles Roser. The Anna Maria Island Historical Society’s [AMIHS] beautifully restored complex interprets the Island’s history through its museum, City Jail, Belle Haven [cracker] Cottage and the Mangrove Walk’s indigenous garden.

Using the information that these students collected when their teacher, Ms. Mitchell, brought them on a field trip to our museum, these students gave an excellent presentation on the history of schools on Anna Maria Island.

These AMIHS Board members are hard at work reading the applications from students who live on Anna Maria Island who would like to receive the Society's Annual Scholarship. The winner will be announced on April 24th at the Chamber of Commerce's Card Exchange in the Historical Park.
The money for that award comes from the weekly sale of Settler's Bread during the fall and winter.

Come and see the new rocking chairs on our porch. The chair were purchased with money we received from a grant. They add a nice old fashioned feeling to our museum which honors old times on the island.
P.S. Can you name t the song with these words in the lyrics:
"Oh the rocking chair has got me
I just sit and cry
Rocking and a moaning got no baby to the rock a bye."
