The Clerk of Circuit Court was established as a public trustee by the Florida Constitution in 1838. The Clerk of the Circuit Court serves as the Clerk of Courts, the Clerk of the Board of County Commissioners, Auditor, Recorder, and Custodian of all County Funds. In Manatee County, the Clerk’s office also administers a local child support enforcement program, violence protection advocacy program, Manatee Teen Court, and the preservation of historical resources through its historical resources department. From the FMM Collection FMM2011.20.148:
This dried fish specimen is a Scrawled Cowfish (Latin name: Acanthostracion quadricornis). One of its most unique features is its hexagonal starburst pattern on the exterior of its body. This rigid shell is a protective armor that helps keep the fish safe from predators.

From the FMM Collection FMM2015.4.42:
This black and white photograph depicts Robert Sailors with his weaving materials. Sailors owned the Cortez Rural Graded Schoolhouse (the building that now houses the Florida Maritime Museum) as his private residence and studio. He had the iconic horse fountain installed on our grounds, as well as the waterfall mosaic located in the Secret Garden.

These beautiful shells might look familiar to you, they are called cockle shells (Latin name: Dinocardium robustum). You are able to spot beauties like these on Florida’s shores on sandy, sheltered beaches.

Happy Birthday to the United States Coast Guard, it has been keeping the nation’s coasts safe for 236 years! Check out this envelope (FMM2011.11.004) sent from the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Cortez, FL in August of 1983.

The Coast Guard was established on August 4, 1790 by Alexander Hamilton as the Revenue Cutter Service. It gained its current name when the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the Life-Saving Service in January of 1915.

Have you stopped by to see the Atala butterflies on our grounds? Check them out before they’re gone! These butterflies were once thought to be extinct but have made a comeback thanks to the Florida native plant, Coontie. They are a small butterfly, but are quite beautiful with their electric blue patterned wings.
