Join us in celebrating and preserving the heart of our community. The Alliance Historical Society is responsible for the collection, preservation, and organization of historical materials of the city of Alliance, Ohio. Members of the Society work with area schools and community organizations to present historical talks. Exhibits of historical materials are supplied by the Society for display at lo

cal businesses and public buildings. The Society is known for its award-winning YouTube video series, “Marking Time in Alliance,” and its many publications on the history of Alliance. The Mabel Hartzell Historical Home is owned and operated by the Alliance Historical Society. It was built in 1867 for Matthew and Mary Edwards Earley. The Earley home is a showplace of life in Alliance in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Tours may be scheduled by appointment. Please contact us at least 24 hours in advance. The Alliance History Mini Museum is located on the Mabel Hartzell property and includes a 1910 Alliance car, items manufactured in Alliance, and items related to Alliance’s cultural history.

On Tuesday, June 16 at 6 p.m., local historian Michelle Dillon will discuss “The Mystery of New Guinea” inside Rodman Auditorium as part of the library’s Juneteenth observance.

Dillon, a retired librarian, will share what she has found during her research about the Black settlement that flourished in Lexington Township in the early 1800s.

Registration is required.

This week's Alliance City Band story tells of Emil Rinkendorf who directed the band for 23 years. He also led the Canton Grand Army of the Republic Band which became known as "McKinley's Own." Paul Hobe tells us, "'Rinkie' as he was known was well-liked and respected by his 'boys.' Ed Trott who appears in the 1923 photo of the band with the cape uniforms was my math teacher and just a few years later as a colleague and friend very often would bring up his memories of the Rinkendorf years."
