CHRS is back with another edition of Tuned In Talks!

Join the California Historical Radio Society for an in-depth technical presentation on Software-Defined Radio (SDR)with John Staples.

Software-defined radio represents a fundamental shift in how radio signals can be received, processed, and analyzed, replacing many functions traditionally performed by dedicated analog hardware with flexible digital processing.

Enjoy live demonstrations of at least four different SDR hardware and software configurations.

Topics for a technically oriented audience will include:

SDR receiver architecture and signal flow
The circuitry behind SDR receivers
Analog-to-digital conversion and digital signal processing
The mathematics underlying SDR operation
SDR hardware and software configurations
Live reception and analysis of radio signals
Advantages, limitations, and capabilities of software-defined receivers

Tickets are $10 for non-members and free for members.

The September Sound Bites event is Saturday, September 12th!

This time the focus will be on podcasting and radio presenting. Come record yourself talking into a microphone! This drop-in workshop is designed especially for kids and teens. No prior experience is needed, and participants can stop by anytime during the two-hour window. You will be notified when/ if your PSA will air.

Sound Bites is CHRS's initiative focused on offering monthly hands-on experiences for younger audiences, introducing them to the history of communication through interactive learning and making.

Sound Bites is designed for kids and their grown-ups to enjoy together. Please plan to stay and participate alongside your child during the event!

This was when radio became a central part of American life bringing news, entertainment, music, and shared experiences into homes across the country.

Our new exhibit brings this remarkable era to life through historic radios, artifacts, and stories from CHRS’s collection.

Let's join Bob Rydzewski of California Historical Radio Society to learn about the earliest days of ham radio as he tells the inspiring story of Fred Mudgett, the first amateur to aid in disaster communications, and the ultimately tragic tale of Henry Heim Jr., presented to the U.S. Congress as a national security risk. Amateurs like these helped pave the way to wireless communication as we know it today. The talk even features our very own Rachel Lee! Enjoy!
