Part 1 (14:00–15:00) Artist Talk — Yeh Yu-Chun (Changhua, Taiwan, Director of instant42 / Baguashan Power Art Festival)
Yeh Yu-Chun presents on the theme "Where Art Meets Local Culture: Possibilities for Art Connecting Changhua and Aomori," sharing practices of collaboration with local residents, temples, and communities, and exploring the connections between Aomori's cultural resources — Yunoshima, Benzaiten, and the Nebuta Festival — and Taiwanese artistic practice.

Part 2 (15:00–15:30) Artist Talk —Chakkrit Chimnok (Chiang Rai, Thailand)
Mr. Chimnok will present his practice as a multimedia and performance artist rooted in Chiang Rai and the Mekong river basin, with work engaging culture, society, environment, politics, and human rights. His talk will explore the spiritual significance of water in northern Thailand and the connections between the Mekong river landscape and the sacred geography of Yunoshima — offering a vital Southeast Asian perspective to the broader dialogue.

Part 3 (15:40–17:30) Panel Discussion — with ACAC curatorial staff and Aomori art community representatives
A moderated dialogue deepening the conversation between Taiwan, Thailand, and Japan on local culture and art, water-centred spirituality, and the possibilities of cross-border artistic exchange.

“The Precious Guest Arrives”

Introduction

In the context of ongoing social, economic, and environmental transformations, many spaces within local communities have been abandoned or have lost their roles in everyday life. The “home,” once a center of relationships and memory, has gradually become a mere structure awaiting oblivion.

“The Precious Guest Arrives” emerges from an intention to revive such spaces through the presence of “visitors” in the form of artists, creators, and audiences. These visitors do not simply occupy the space; rather, they initiate new dialogues between people, place, and memory.

Within the framework of a contemporary art festival, this project emphasizes the use of art as a tool to stimulate perception, restore relationships, and create shared experiences between the community and the outside world even if only for a brief moment.

Principles and Rationale

Contemporary urban and community development is no longer confined to physical structures alone, but also encompasses “structures of meaning” that define the value of a place for its people.

Abandoned houses within communities are not merely empty spaces; they are sites layered with history, memory, and social wounds. Allowing these spaces to deteriorate equates to the loss of irreplaceable cultural capital.

This project therefore proposes an artistic intervention approach to:

Transform “abandoned spaces” into “meaningful spaces”
Open opportunities for community participation (participatory process)
Use art as a universal language to connect people across different contexts

The concept of “The Precious Guest Arrives” reflects a cultural relationship of hospitality. A “guest” is not merely a visitor, but someone of value. At the same time, “precious” (kaew) symbolizes beauty and fragility something that requires care. The arrival of a guest is thus not just a temporary event, but a process that brings the “home” back to life.

บทนำ

ในบริบทของการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางสังคม เศรษฐกิจ และสิ่งแวดล้อม พื้นที่จำนวนมากในชุมชนท้องถิ่นได้ถูกทิ้งร้างหรือสูญเสียบทบาทในชีวิตประจำวัน “บ้าน” ซึ่งเคยเป็นศูนย์กลางของความสัมพันธ์และความทรงจำ กลับกลายเป็นเพียงโครงสร้างที่รอการถูกลืม
โครงการ “แขกแก้วมาเยือน” เกิดขึ้นจากความตั้งใจที่จะฟื้นคืนชีวิตให้กับพื้นที่ดังกล่าว ผ่านการเข้ามาของ “ผู้มาเยือน” ในฐานะศิลปิน นักสร้างสรรค์ และผู้ชม ซึ่งไม่ได้เพียงเข้ามาใช้พื้นที่ แต่เข้ามาสร้างบทสนทนาใหม่ระหว่าง “คน–สถานที่–ความทรงจำ”
ภายใต้กรอบของเทศกาลศิลปะร่วมสมัย โครงการนี้มุ่งเน้นการใช้ศิลปะเป็นเครื่องมือในการกระตุ้นการรับรู้ ฟื้นฟูความสัมพันธ์ และสร้างประสบการณ์ร่วมระหว่างชุมชนกับโลกภายนอก แม้จะเป็นเพียงช่วงเวลาสั้นๆ

หลักการและเหตุผล

การพัฒนาเมืองและชุมชนในปัจจุบันมิได้จำกัดอยู่เพียงโครงสร้างทางกายภาพ หากแต่รวมถึง “โครงสร้างทางความหมาย” ที่กำหนดว่าพื้นที่หนึ่งมีคุณค่าอย่างไรต่อผู้คน
บ้านร้างในชุมชนมิใช่เพียงพื้นที่ว่างเปล่า แต่เป็นพื้นที่ที่สะสมชั้นของประวัติศาสตร์ ความทรงจำ และบาดแผลทางสังคม การปล่อยให้พื้นที่เหล่านี้เสื่อมสลาย เท่ากับการสูญเสียทุนทางวัฒนธรรมที่ไม่อาจทดแทนได้

โครงการนี้จึงเสนอแนวทางการแทรกแซงเชิงศิลปะ (artistic intervention) เพื่อ:
เปลี่ยน “พื้นที่ร้าง” ให้กลายเป็น “พื้นที่มีความหมาย”
เปิดพื้นที่ให้เกิดการมีส่วนร่วมของชุมชน (participatory process)
ใช้ศิลปะเป็นภาษากลางในการเชื่อมโยงผู้คนต่างบริบท
แนวคิด “แขกแก้วมาเยือน” สะท้อนความสัมพันธ์เชิงวัฒนธรรมของการต้อนรับ ซึ่ง “แขก” ไม่ใช่เพียงผู้มาเยือน แต่คือ “ผู้มีคุณค่า” ขณะเดียวกัน “แก้ว” ก็เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความงดงามและความเปราะบาง สิ่งที่ต้องได้รับการดูแล การมาถึงของแขกจึงไม่ใช่เพียงเหตุการณ์ชั่วคราว แต่เป็นกระบวนการที่ทำให้ “บ้าน” กลับมามีชีวิตอีกครั้ง

ฟื้นฟูพื้นที่บ้านร้างให้กลับมามีชีวิตผ่านกิจกรรมศิลปะร่วมสมัย
สร้างการมีส่วนร่วมระหว่างศิลปิน ชุมชน และผู้ชม
กระตุ้นการรับรู้เกี่ยวกับคุณค่าของพื้นที่และความทรงจำท้องถิ่น

Chiang Rai International Performance art project 2026 : River Resistance

Toxic Mining and the Kok–Sai–Ruak–Mekong Rivers: Rivers, Resistance, and Art as Action
The Kok, Sai/Ruak, and Mekong Rivers are transboundary waterways that have long sustained the lives, economies, and cultures of communities in the upper Mekong region. Today, however, these rivers are facing a serious crisis caused by mining activities in the headwaters, particularly in Shan State, Myanmar. Reports indicate the presence of more than 2,400 rare earth and related metal mines, both legal and informal. Through soil leaching and extraction processes, these mines release arsenic, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals into streams and rivers. Toxic substances are carried by water and sediment through the Kok and Sai Rivers before ultimately flowing into the Mekong.
The impacts of this pollution accumulate within ecosystems, fish populations, aquatic plants, and food chains, directly affecting public health, food security, and the livelihoods of downstream communities. The situation becomes even more complex when combined with large-scale dam projects and water management schemes that alter natural river flows, causing sediments and toxic substances to remain trapped and persist for longer periods.
Within this context, March 14, recognized globally as the International Day of Action Against Dams / International Day of Action for Rivers, Water and Life, holds profound symbolic significance. Established through global movements of communities affected by dams, this day affirms that rivers are not merely economic resources but living systems that deserve protection and respect.
Building upon this spirit of resistance, the Chiang Rai International Performance Art Project 2026: River Resistance invites Thai and international performance artists to participate in site-specific artistic actions along the Kok River in Chiang Rai, Thailand, during 12- 16 March 2026. This project positions performance art not as spectacle, but as social action—an embodied form of protest, remembrance, and critical inquiry—bringing the hidden wounds of the river into public visibility. It asserts that rivers are not expendable infrastructures, but living entities carrying memory, struggle, and a shared future for the Mekong region.

ในบริบทนี้ วันที่ 14 มีนาคม ซึ่งได้รับการยอมรับในระดับนานาชาติว่าเป็น วันปฏิบัติการสากลต่อต้านเขื่อน / วันปฏิบัติการเพื่อแม่น้ำ น้ำ และชีวิต มีความหมายเชิงสัญลักษณ์อย่างลึกซึ้ง วันดังกล่าวถือกำเนิดจากการเคลื่อนไหวของชุมชนผู้ได้รับผลกระทบจากเขื่อนทั่วโลก เพื่อยืนยันว่าแม่น้ำไม่ใช่เพียงทรัพยากรทางเศรษฐกิจ แต่คือระบบชีวิตที่สมควรได้รับการคุ้มครองและเคารพ
ต่อยอดจากจิตวิญญาณแห่งการต่อต้านนี้ โครงการศิลปะแสดงสดนานาชาติ เชียงราย 2569 : การต่อต้านเพื่อแม่น้ำ (River Resistance) ได้เชิญชวนศิลปินศิลปะแสดงสดทั้งไทยและนานาชาติ เข้าร่วมการปฏิบัติการทางศิลปะในพื้นที่เฉพาะบริเวณ แม่น้ำกก จังหวัดเชียงราย ระหว่างวันที่ 12-16 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2569 โครงการนี้มองศิลปะแสดงสดไม่ใช่เพียงการแสดง หากแต่เป็นการกระทำเชิงสังคม การประท้วงเชิงสัญลักษณ์ และการทำให้บาดแผลของแม่น้ำปรากฏต่อสายตาสาธารณะอีกครั้ง เพื่อยืนยันว่าแม่น้ำไม่ใช่โครงสร้างที่ถูกใช้แล้วทิ้ง แต่คือชีวิต ความทรงจำ การต่อสู้ และอนาคตร่วมของผู้คนในภูมิภาคลุ่มน้ำโขง
