ศิลปินและนักสร้างภาพยนตร์ที่พำนักและทำงานในกรุงเทพมหานคร งานศิลปะของเขาครอบคลุมสื่อที่มีความหลากหลาย ทั้งภาพยนตร์สั้น วิดีโอทดลอง การแสดง ไปจนถึงวิดีโอจัดวาง และมักสร้างสรรค์ผลงานภาพเคลื่อนไหวโดยใช้ร่างกายตัวเองเป็นสื่อในการนำเสนอ งานศิลปะของเขามักเกี่ยวโยงกับเรื่องเล่า ตำนาน และเศษเสี้ยวของประวัติศาสตร์ทั้งกระแสหลักหรือนอกกระแสสังคมไทย โดยดัดแปลงสู่ภาพของนิยายวิทยาศาสตร์ผสานอารมณ์ขัน พร้อมทั้งเสียดสีสังคมวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัย ผลงานของเขามักมีตัวละครเอกที่ปรากฏซ้ำในรูปแบบการใช้ร่างกายอนาล็อคของตัวศิลปินเองให้แปรสภาพเป็นจิตวิญญาณดิจิทัล โดยไม่ได้นำเสนออนาคตในภาพแห่งจินตนาการอันไกลพู้น แต่กลับมองในภาพปัจจุบันที่ก่อแบบขึ้นจากการบรรจบของเทพปกรณัม ความทรงจำ และเทคโนโลยีอันรุดหน้า

สารตั้งต้นผลงานสร้างสรรค์ของศิลปินคนหนึ่งมักประกอบด้วยการทดลอง ร่าง พัฒนาหลักฐานงานร่างแบบเหล่านี้เป็นสิ่งที่ช่วยยืนยันถึงการแสดงโครงสร้างความคิดและแรงบันดาลใจก่อนพัฒนาไปสู่ต้นแบบจริง แต่ในฐานข้อมูลของศิลปินหลายคนพบว่าน่าเสียดายที่หลายครั้งพบว่าการเก็บงานร่างแบบหรือเอกสารหลายชิ้นถูกทิ้งหรือทำลาย ทั้งที่อาจสืบเนื่องเชื่อมโยงไปยังบริบทต่างๆ ของสังคม หรือเผยให้เห็นแง่มุมอันน่าสนใจของการเปลี่ยนผ่านยุคสมัย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นวิถีชีวิต ความคิด วัฒนธรรม เหตุการณ์เกี่ยวเนื่องทางสังคม รวมถึงยังเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของการเสริมเนื้อหาอันสมบูรณ์ให้แก่ความเป็นจดหมายเหตุ

การนำเสนอผลงานภาพร่างและลายเส้นของอังคาร กัลยาณพงศ์ ในนิทรรศการครั้งนี้จึงคล้ายเชื้อเชิญให้ผู้ชมพบเขาในสภาวะของการประกอบร่างสร้างตัวตน ผู้กำลังทดลอง คลำทาง และปล่อยให้ปากกาพาไปมากกว่าการเป็นภาพจำของปราชญ์จิตรกร-กวี-ศิลปินผู้สมบูรณ์แบบ ซึ่งเขาประมวลเอาประสบการณ์รอบตัวมาถ่ายทอดด้วยดินสอร่างลงบนกระดาษ ภาพร่างเหล่านี้จึงไม่สมบูรณ์ ปรากฏเป็นเพียงรูปรอยของคน สัตว์ สิ่งของ สถานที่ แต่เพราะความไม่สมบูรณ์ของภาพเหล่านี้ต่างหากที่ได้ให้ “ที่ทาง” และฐานะทางประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะ “ที่ทาง” ในฐานะภาพร่างซึ่งถูกทิ้งไว้เบื้องหลัง และมักไม่ถูกนับเป็นงานศิลปะ แต่คือผลจากกิจของจิตรกรที่พึงปฏิบัติ วาด/ลากเส้น เพื่อบันทึกประสบการณ์ และทำให้ความทรงจำปรากฏรูป ก่อนถูกทิ้งไว้ในฐานะภาพร่างซึ่งยากจะระบุได้ว่าจะไปปรากฏในงานที่สมบูรณ์ชิ้นไหนสักชิ้น

The starting points of an artist’s creative practice often take the form of experiments, sketches, and development. These preliminary materials provide evidence of the structures of thought and inspiration that precede the development of a finished work. Yet in the archives of many artists, it is regrettably common to find that sketches have been discarded or destroyed, despite their potential connections to broader social contexts and their capacity to reveal compelling aspects of historical transition. Such materials also contribute to a richer and more comprehensive understanding of the archive itself.

The presentation of Angkarn Kallayanapong’s sketches and drawings in this exhibition therefore invites viewers to encounter him in the process of forming himself: experimenting, feeling his way forward, and allowing the pen to lead him, rather than encountering the image of the accomplished artist. Angkarn draws these sketches from experiences, leaving pencil marks on paper that remain incomplete, offering only traces and outlines of people, animals, objects, and places. Yet it is precisely this incompleteness that gives these drawings a “place” and a particular status within art history - a place for the sketch that is often excluded from the category of the artwork itself. Rather, these drawings are the residue of a painter’s practice, making lines to record experience and give visible form to memory. What remains are sketches whose eventual destination is uncertain, traces for which it may no longer be possible to determine whether, or in which finished work, they ever found their final form.

ธาดาสำรวจข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับภาพวาดภูมิทัศน์ภูกระดึงและทิวทัศน์อื่นๆ ของอังคาร กัลยาณพงศ์ ที่มักเดินทางไปทั้งเพื่อท่องเที่ยวหรือสำรวจเพื่อการเรียนรู้ ด้วยพื้นเพความรักที่มีต่อธรรมชาติ ภูมิทัศน์ที่อังคารบันทึกไว้จึงมิได้เป็นเพียงภาพของพื้นที่หรือธรรมชาติ หากยังเป็นร่องรอยของการมองเห็นและการรับรู้ต่อผืนแผ่นดินในช่วงเวลาหนึ่ง

สำหรับธาดา ผลงานชุดนี้คล้ายเป็นการเดินทางอีกครั้ง ผ่านภาพและประสบการณ์ร่วมสมัยของเขาเอง ในรูปแบบของจิตรกรรมที่ขยายตัวออกไปสู่ลักษณะกึ่งศิลปะจัดวาง เพื่อสำรวจภูมิทัศน์ของประเทศไทยทั้งสี่ทิศในปัจจุบัน ไม่ใช่ในฐานะภาพแทนของธรรมชาติเท่านั้น หากเป็นภูมิทัศน์ที่แฝงไว้ด้วยร่องรอยของการเปลี่ยนแปลง ความขัดแย้ง การพัฒนา การสูญเสีย และความเปราะบางที่ซ้อนทับอยู่บนผืนแผ่นดิน ภูมิประเทศในงานจึงไม่ได้เป็นข้อเท็จจริงทางภูมิศาสตร์ หากเป็นแผนที่ของความรู้สึกที่สะท้อนสภาวะของประเทศในสายตาของศิลปินในช่วงเวลาปัจจุบัน

Tada explores archival information on Angkarn Kallayanapong’s paintings of Phu Kradueng and other landscapes he frequently visited, whether for travel or as part of his own exploration and learning. Rooted in Angkarn’s deep affinity with nature, the landscapes he recorded are not merely representations of places or the natural world, but also traces of how the land was seen and perceived at a particular moment in time.

For Tada, this body of work is akin to undertaking the journey once again, through his own contemporary images and experiences. Taking the form of paintings that expand into a semi-installational mode, the works explore Thailand's present-day landscapes across its four regions. Rather than representing nature alone, these landscapes bear traces of change, conflict, development, loss, and fragility layered upon the land. The terrain depicted in the works therefore functions not as geographical fact, but as a map of feeling, reflecting the country's condition as perceived by the artist at the present moment.

The session will also touch on the current developments in the works and artistic thinking of Chulayarnnon and Thada.

ในตอนกลางวัน พลังงานแสงอาทิตย์จะถูกกักเก็บในแผ่นโซลาร์เซลล์และนำมาแปลงเป็นพลังงานไฟฟ้าเพื่อใช้สำหรับเครื่องดักแมลงที่ติดตั้งไว้ ณ หอจดหมายเหตุและผลงานอังคาร กัลยาณพงศ์ และในยามค่ำคืนพลังงานแสงอาทิตย์ได้แปลงเป็นรังสีอัลตร้าไวโอเล็ตที่หลอกล่อแมลงให้หลงเข้ามาติดกับดักหลายสิบตัว พวกมันถูกช็อตจนขาขาด หัวขาด ตัวขาด ทิ้งร่องรอยอันไหม้เกรียมจนเป็นเถ้าถ่าน ส่วนวิญญาณของแมลงเหล่านั้นก็ออกจากร่างไปไหลวนอยู่ในจักรวาลของสังสารวัฏ

หากแสงอาทิตย์ในงานของอังคารเชื่อมโยงกับสัจธรรมหรือพลังอำนาจที่กำจัดอวิชชาหรือความไม่รู้ให้หายไป ซากแมลงที่หลงมาติดเครื่องดักแมลงพลังงานแสงอาทิตย์ก็อาจถูกมองเป็นตัวแทนของอวิชชา ขณะเดียวกันสถานการณ์ทางสังคมและการเมืองในปัจจุบันกลับพบว่าสัจธรรมหรือพลังอำนาจนั้นกลับถูกตั้งคำถามถึงความยุติธรรมของพลังแสงอาทิตย์ในการกำจัดแมลงหรืออวิชชาเหล่านั้น ซากแมลงจึงไม่ใช่เพียงอวิชชาที่ถูกกำจัดแต่กลับกลายเป็นเหยื่อของอำนาจที่ไม่อาจต่อต้านหรือมีสิทธิ์มีเสียงในการแสดงออก เหลือเพียงเสียงไฟฟ้าช็อตที่ปิดปากเหยื่อให้เงียบไปพร้อมกับความตาย

แสงจากพระอาทิตย์แผดเผาเหล่าแมลงจนไร้สิ้นเสียง เหลือแต่เพียงวิญญาณ ไม่แน่ใจว่าพระอาทิตย์ได้ส่องแสงนำทางเหล่าแมลงสู่สรวงสวรรค์หรือเยาะเย้ยถากถางต่อความตายอย่างอเนจอนาถของแมลงเหล่านั้นกันแน่

During the day, solar energy is stored in photovoltaic panels and converted into electricity to power an insect trap installed at the Angkarn Kallayanapong Archive. At night, that same solar energy is transformed into ultraviolet light, luring dozens of insects into the trap. They are electrocuted, their legs, heads, and bodies severed, leaving behind scorched traces reduced to ash. Their spirits, meanwhile, depart their bodies to circulate through the cosmic cycle of samsara.

If the sunlight in Angkarn's work signifies ultimate truth or an illuminating force that dispels avijjā (ignorance), then the insects ensnared by the solar-powered trap may likewise be read as embodiments of ignorance. Yet within the context of today's social and political realities, this very force of truth and illumination invites questions about justice. Is the sun's power—or the authority it represents—just in its eradication of these insects, or of ignorance itself? The insect remains therefore become more than symbols of ignorance overcome; they are transformed into victims of a power they cannot resist, denied any voice or agency. All that remains is the crack of the electric current, silencing them in death.

The sun's blazing light scorched the insects into silence, leaving behind nothing but their spirits. It was impossible to tell whether the sun was shining to guide them to heaven, or mocking the pitiful tragedy of their deaths.

ภูมิทัศน์ทางวรรณกรรมของอังคาร กัลยาณพงศ์ เกลื่อนกล่นไปด้วยซากปรักหักพัง เช่นเดียวกับที่มาของชื่อ “อังคาร” ซึ่งไม่ใช่นามเดิม แต่กร่อนมาจากประสบการณ์พังทลายในชีวิต และได้ทิ้งร่องรอยของความคิดและหลักฐานการเคยมีตัวตนเอาไว้ ผ่านผลงาน แบบร่าง และจดหมายเหตุ นิทรรศการ ถ่านเถ้าและกลายกลับ ตั้งต้นจากคำถามเกี่ยวกับร่องรอยเหล่านี้ เมื่อโอกาส จังหวะ ผู้คน กระดาษร่าง เอกสารเก่า จดหมาย พื้นที่ และเวลามาบรรจบกันในวาระครบรอบ 100 ปี เพื่อเชื้อเชิญให้ผู้ชมได้พบกับผลงานและจดหมายเหตุของอังคารที่เหลือทิ้ง ตกค้างไว้เป็นมรดก ตัวแทน และรูปรอยความคิดของจิตรกร-กวี

ในนิทรรศการครั้งนี้ จุฬญาณนนท์ ศิริผล และ ธาดา เฮงทรัพย์กูล ได้มาร่วมตีความและย้อนรอยความคิดทางพุทธปรัชญาและอุดมคติเกี่ยวกับธรรมชาติในงานของอังคาร ผ่านการทดลองเชิงรูปแบบและการขยับเคลื่อนจากภูมิทัศน์เดิมไปสู่พื้นที่ใหม่ การสลายไปของอังคารเกิดขึ้นเพื่อให้ทุกอย่างยังดำเนินต่อไป ในอีกนัยหนึ่งคือการรื้อถอนโครงสร้างเดิมเพื่อกลายไปเป็นสิ่งใหม่ หรืออาจเป็นการเดินย่ำบนซากปรักหักพังเพื่อทวนถามถึงอดีตและจินตนาการถึงอนาคตได้

นอกจากนี้ยังมีนักวิชาการด้านวรรณกรรมและด้านทัศนศิลป์ ประกอบด้วย จิรัฏฐ์ เฉลิมแสนยากร ประพันธ์ แจ้งกิจชัย และ อาทิตย์ ศรีจันทร์ ได้มาร่วมกันตีความจดหมายเหตุของอังคาร กัลยาณพงศ์ เพื่อขบคิดเกี่ยวกับที่ทางของจิตรกร-กวี ในประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะและประวัติวรรณกรรม รวมถึงสร้างบทสนทนาระหว่างทัศนศิลป์และวรรณศิลป์ อันเป็นมรดกทางความคิดที่สำคัญของอังคาร กัลยาณพงศ์

In the literary landscape of the work of Angkarn Kallayanapong's poetry is littered with ruins. This imagery also resonates with the origin of the name Angkarn, which means the ashes left behind after destruction and dissolution. Like the late artist-poet himself, these ashes remain as traces of thought and evidence of a life once lived, preserved through artworks, sketches, and archival records. The exhibition Ash and Alteration begins with a question about these traces. On the occasion of the centenary of Angkarn’s birth, a convergence of opportunity, circumstance, people, draft manuscripts, archival documents, letters, spaces, and time invites viewers to encounter Angkarn through his own remnants: the ashes, fragments, and papers he left behind as inheritance, as representation, and as the material imprint of his mind.

In this exhibition, Chulayarnnon Siriphol and Tada Hengsapkul contributed to the interpretation and revisit the Buddhist philosophy and ideals of nature that permeate Angkarn's work through formal experimentation and a movement away from familiar landscapes toward new territories. In another sense, Angkarn’s dissolution allows everything else to continue, dissolution is the dismantling of existing structures in order to become something new - or perhaps dissolution is the act of walking upon ruins, of retracing the past while imagining the future.

Also, scholars of literature and visual art, Jirat Chalermsanyakorn, Prapan Jangkitchai, and Artit Srijan, have collaborated to reinterpret the archive of Angkarn Kallayanapong, to highlight his place within the histories of both art and literature, and to foster a dialogue between the visual and literary arts. This dialogue constitutes one of the most enduring intellectual legacies of Angkarn Kallayanapong.
