A space for artists and audiences to experience high quality, challenging, new artworks in a wide range of contemporary visual art media through commissions, group exhibitions, performances, publications and events. Set up in 1994 the organisation is still run by its two artist-founder-directors – David Crawforth and Naomi Siderfin - who work collaboratively with the artists they commission from their base in the former Lambeth Ragged School in Vauxhall, central London. Beaconsfield believes that the arts should be a guardian of free speech, diversity of expression and democracy. The charity's artistic policy promotes dialogue locally, nationally and internationally and seeks to contribute to social and cultural integration. Beaconsfield recycles its waste, works on recycled paper and is probably the first and only arts organisation in London to be powered by 100% green electricity. Besides, it runs the Ragged Canteen, which serves ethically sourced seasonal dishes cooked to order, Cakehole London cakes, Monmouth coffee, fair trade teas and gluten-free selection - at affordable prices. Free Wi-fi, art magazines and week-end newspapers are provided.

SAVE BEACONSFIELD GALLERY LONDON

Beaconsfield urgently needs your support to remain in its iconic central London building. Without immediate help, we will have to close our doors within weeks. So, this is a direct appeal to artists, audiences, neighbours and friends whose lives have been touched by our charity and its community – as participant or visitor – and to those who think that independent culture in the UK is important.

After many years without core public funding, rising costs and shrinking cultural funds have left us with no reserves. We now need direct support from people who believe independent cultural spaces must continue to exist and remain accessible.

When it’s gone it’s gone

We have launched this Crowdfunder to cover rent and essential core costs for six months, to help secure longer-term funding to protect Beaconsfield’s programme, and remain open.

Paul Valentine, The Mayor of Lambeth will be congratulating Gail Dickerson on her local research and environmental work relating to human communities and noting Beaconsfield’s longstanding engagement with local schools and artists (31 years).

Valentine will urge people to support the Crowdfunder campaign if they want the work to continue and Beaconsfield to remain in its historic site

Beaconsfield has been the custodian of the remaining wing of the former Lambeth Ragged Schools since 1995, curating a programme of experimental art and public engagement for more than 30 years, and faces the possibility of having to leave the venue at short notice due to lack of core costs.

Building on Gail Dickerson’s local research project in the Upper Gallery, a series of London Clay workshops with local school children in June and July focused on the built environment and land common to gallery and residents.

Beaconsfield’s current Earth AIR Gail Dickerson is researching the earth between our feet in Vauxhall. Gail is Lambeth-based and works closely with London Geodiversity Partnership and Museum of London in her exploration of local geologies and London Clay.

Beaconsfield’s current Earth AIR, Gail Dickerson, is researching the earth between our feet in Vauxhall. Gail is Lambeth-based and works closely with London Biodiversity Partnership and Museum of London in her exploration of local geologies and London Clay.

Gail presented her current project to researchers with Transart Institute for Creative Research who visited Beaconsfield today.

Gail will be in residence at Beaconsfield until 12 September.
