Alan Davie worked rapidly on the studio floor using homemade paints to produce vibrantly coloured shapes, signs, words and biomorphic forms. He wrote that the spontaneous exploration of the magical possibilities of colour was ‘perhaps the most important element in my painting (and indeed my life)’.
.
John Bellany and Alan Davie: Cradle of Magic is at Newport Street Gallery until 1 September.
☀️Visit us this bank holiday weekend! We are open 10am-6pm on Saturday, Sunday AND Monday!☀️

Jeff Koons first experimented with shop-bought inflatable toys when he moved to New York as a young artist in the late 1970s. The inflatable toy bunny eating a carrot would later appear in the iconic polished cast titled ‘Rabbit’ in Koons’ Statuary series in 1986. In 2003, Koons referenced another early inflatable toy in this mirror-polished stainless steel sculpture, ‘Elephant’.
.
‘Elephant’ was on display in Jeff Koons: Now at Newport Street Gallery in 2016, the first major UK exhibition devoted to the artist since 2008.

The exhibition’s earliest Bellany work – The Crucifixion, 1963 – dates from his time at Edinburgh College of Art, where he obsessively reimagined Old Master paintings by Grünewald, Bellini and Rembrandt...religious and classical subjects were recast according to the artist’s memories and experiences: bloody, gutted fish replacing the three figures in The Crucifixion. He explained: 'You look at the place you come from with such intensity that the painting has a meaning that is universal.’

‘We are all – like the creatures of John Bellany’s imagination, which were directly inspired by the unremitting drama of the everyday that we think of as humdrum – precariously afloat above fathomless waters.’ 🌊

Thank you Royal Academy of Arts for including us in your '10 art exhibitions to see in March'

'Newport Street Gallery brings together two of Scotland’s best-known postwar artists: the painters John Bellany and Alan Davie RA...this show proves Davie and Bellany...share plenty in common, least of all in their vivid use of colour and how their upbringings provided a constant source of inspiration.'

'Once you decide on the parameters and figurines that you want to work with, then you have to be a director. You have to know what belongs in which place and what effect it will have. As an adolescent, you adopt visual platitudes. As a provocateur, you need these. But you stand there looking at them and ask yourself what you should actually do with them, and then you construct images and poetry emerges. ' - Artist Martin Eder.

Announcing our next exhibition: ‘Cradle of Magic’. Opening on 27 February 2019, the two-man exhibition will present paintings by John Bellany and Alan Davie. Spanning four decades, ‘Cradle of Magic’ demonstrates the importance of Celtic symbolism and imagery to these two visionary twentieth-century artists, working a generation apart.

Martin Eder - Painting

Eder states that the sources for his paintings – smut, cute animal pictures, plastic flowers, pseudo-religious iconography, post-apocalyptic or celestial skies – are selected ‘in order to fulfil platitudes.’ These motifs appeal in part because of their ubiquity and in part because they reveal the arbitrariness of societal standards.

Martin Eder - Painting Purple

‘I scratch my paintings on purpose.’
-
Eder is inspired by other artists such as Edvard Munch, who left his paintings outside in the open for months, so as to connect them to the earth. In his quest to represent this authenticity in his own works, Eder coats his works in heavy varnish, as well as scratching their surfaces in order to allow his works to appear more authentic.

“Why did I paint a picture like More Stars than Skies, where a woman is stabbing a cat in the throat, and the cat has my eyes? For me, it is not about shock but about processing.”

Eder often portrays his protagonists engaging in strange behaviours, contextualised within dreamlike or nightmarish scenarios.

"I set out to choose the stupidest subjects in order to fulfil platitudes and create images that everyone understands or is familiar with. When you have the stupidest subjects – whether it’s baby animals, nudity or internet porn – things that everybody knows, you have the characters, but it is only then that you can really get started with the scenery, the dramaturgy." - Artist Martin Eder.
