The Benilde Fashion Museum (BFM) is proud to announce its participation in two ICOM (International Council of Museums) conferences this October, marking the BFM's first presentation in an international forum.

At the ICOM-Costume Conference, with the theme “Undressing the Institution: Costume, Fashion and Textile Collections, Colonial Histories, New Museologies,” BFM Director Gerry Torres will present “From Mountain to Convent to Hollywood: Interpreting Filipiniana in the Benilde Fashion Museum,” which problematizes how the Filipiniana classification is applied to the museum's collections. The conference will be held at the Museo del Traje in Madrid, Spain, from October 5 to 8, 2026.

At the ICOM-UMAC (University Museums and Collections) conference, with the theme “University Museums as Actors for Sustainable Development,” Gerry Torres presents “Advancing Sustainable Development Through Education and Exhibition: The Case of the Benilde Fashion Museum." The paper expounds on the museum’s goal of integrating fashion heritage into teaching and public presentations meet three SDGs: Inclusive and Equitable Quality Education, Gender Equality, and Sustainable Cities and Communities. The conference will be held at the University of Patras, Greece, on October 12-16, 2026.

Beyond shopping, the Likhang HABI Fair at SPACE at One Ayala offers a variety of experiences, from talks and special events to exhibits and more!

1. Kwentong Kultura | HABI Lectures
A series of talks and panel discussions that offer a deeper understanding of the processes, challenges, and traditions behind Philippine textiles. As part of HABI’s conservation advocacy, the program brings this knowledge to a wider audience.

4. TELAserye: HABI Docu Screenings
See the stories behind the textiles. A special screening of documentaries on Philippine textile traditions and weaving communities, including selected documentary features from GMA News and Public Affairs’ i-Witness and a talkback with Howie Severino and Mariz Umali. Admission is free.

5. Benilde Fashion Museum
An exhibition of some of the country’s notable couture designers such as Ben Farrales, Aureo Alonzo, Pitoy Moreno, and Auggie Cordero.

6. Museo Pambata
A special booth where kids can enjoy handloom weaving and other fun activities.

HABI Fair is a celebration of the communities that give Philippine textiles their soul. Each garment or woven product carries traces of the land, the labor, the skill, and the aspirations of the people who made it.

The Benilde Fashion Museum (BFM), the country's first college-based fashion museum, joins the 16th edition of the annual Likhang Habi Market Fair.

BFM will showcase Philippine fashion heritage by renowned Filipino designers from the 20th century, to include Filipiniana dresses worn by former First Lady Luz Magsaysay and the late Beth Day Romulo.

Likhang Habi Market Fair will run from Friday, October 9, to Sunday, October 11, 2026, at One Ayala’s SPACE Events Hall in Makati City.

The corner of Leon Guinto and Estrada Street is now illuminated with the newly installed lights in the Benilde Fashion Museum board-up.

The renovation continues in the museum’s future home, the historic Miguel Febres Cordero Building, also previously known as the Mayflower Apartments, a 1938 heritage building designed by Ar. Fernando Ocampo. The board-up features the vision of the building after renovations, serving as a glimpse into what will become the Philippines’ first museum dedicated to fashion heritage and a space that will showcase the history, craftsmanship, and evolving artistry of Filipino fashion.

The Benilde Fashion Museum is slated to open in 2027.

The Benilde Fashion Museum will be participating in the 16th Likhang HABI Market Fair on October 9-11, 2026, at SPACE at One Ayala, Makati City.

The museum will install an exhibit that will feature some of the country’s notable couture designers such as Ben Farrales, Aureo Alonzo, Pitoy Moreno, and Auggie Cordero. Selected from the museum's collection, their designs bring together traditional craftsmanship and haute couture, demonstrating the versatility of locally-made fabrics and, through their creations, their concept of Philippine identity.

One of the garments that will be exhibited is this two-piece sinamay ensemble by Ben Farrales from 1990. It features a dotted sequin motif on an inner layer of a strapless mermaid-cut dress and an outer garment that features ruffled side detailing and a slit.

A lecture will also be held about the conservation of the garments by museum conservators Yvonne Tabanao and Marlyn Guiterrez. It will take place at the HABI event venue on October 10, 2026, at 2 PM. The three-day fair will feature around 100 other exhibitors, including weavers, artisans, designers, makers, and textile advocates, along with other activities related to Philippine textiles.

| A 1959 newspaper featured the wedding gown of Tessie Aldaba Silva, created by National Artist for Fashion Salvacion Lim Higgins. The terno gown made of chiffon had a panuelo, and leaf patterns were featured on the butterfly sleeves and the skirt.

The Benilde Fashion Museum houses a number of Lim Higgins wedding gowns, notably worn by Linda Garcia Campos worn around the 1950s, Genoveva Ignacio Bueno from 1954, and of Lim Higgins herself, which she created and wore in 1959. These are part of the museum’s collection of her works, which is also the largest compilation of her designs in the country.

Salvacion Lim Higgins’s creations are being preserved in the Benilde Fashion Museum, which is the largest collection of her works in the country. Additionally, the school she founded in 1960, SLIM’s Fashion and Art School, was absorbed by De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde in 2025.

| Among the memorable designer-model partnerships were Pitoy Moreno and his muse, Conchitina Sevilla Bernardo. Their professional relationship began in the 1960 “Fashion on Wings” show by Women’s Magazine and Philippine Airlines, where the models walked the aisle of the plane. Moreno and Bernardo were, respectively, the youngest designer and model among the participants of the project. Pitoy became a close family friend of Conchitina’s, with him designing her wedding gown when she married Lani Bernardo, and her children’s christening attire.

Conchitina Sevilla Bernardo gifted a number of her garments made by Moreno to the Benilde Fashion Museum, including this cream knit jacket embellished with pear beads, sequins, and organza floral motifs. Her donations are part of Moreno’s creations being preserved in the museum.

Today is the 116th birth anniversary of Filipino couturier Marina Antonio. She is most remembered for her elegantly beautiful wedding gowns with a classical yet timeless appeal. This is evident in one of Antonio’s creations: a bridal gown worn by Elenita Corral Javelona in 1975, which she then donated to the Benilde Fashion Museum.

Antonio emerged as a fashion designer in the pre-war years of Philippine haute couture, in a field with names such as Pacita Longos and Juanita Mina Roa. She opened her first shop on Taft Avenue named Peacock in 1930, along with her siblings. After she married architect and future National Artist Pablo Antonio, she established her own brand called Marina’s Bride, located also in Taft and in the same building as her husband’s office.

Gowns were in demand not for fashion shows yet, but for formal events and most especially for weddings. Antonio dressed ladies from prominent families for such occasions, but she is most renowned for her skill and talent in making wedding gowns. Some of the brides she dressed were Cecilia Araneta Yulo and art advocate Lisa Ongpin Periquet.

Marina Antonio continued to design gowns and participate in fashion shows up to the 1980s. She passed away in 2006, leaving behind a legacy of fashion to her daughter Malu Veloso, her grandchildren Letlet Veloso and Vicky Veloso Barrera, and her great-granddaughter Hannah Barrera, who is an alumna of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.

The Benilde Fashion Museum continues to preserve Antonio’s legacy through this wedding gown donated and worn by Elenita Corral Javelona.
