Mapping Excellence and Honor: UP’s First Campus

In celebration of the 118th foundation anniversary of the University of the Philippines, we are proud to present a special exhibition that narrates the university’s transformation and growth. Through a collection of maps and archival photographs, visitors are invited to explore the early years of UP Manila and discover how a Filipino university began to take shape both in principle and in place.

Visit the Mapping Excellence and Honor: UP’s First Campus exhibit!

About the Exhibit
This exhibit presents a collection of historical maps and photographs that trace the origins and development of the first campus of the University of the Philippines in Manila. Through the lens of mapping, it follows the transformation of physical space into a center of academic excellence, revealing how geography, history, and institutional identity intersect and evolve over time.

More than a visual display, the exhibit highlights the dynamic relationship between geography and history. It underscores the role of the University of the Philippines as a national institution committed to public service. Each map serves not only as a representation of place, but also as a reflection of aspirations, transitions, and the continuing journey toward excellence and honor. β€œMapping Excellence and Honor” ultimately tells a story of place-makingβ€”of how a university’s physical beginnings in Manila became foundational to its enduring mission of serving the nation.

The Foundations of a Filipino University: A Historical Walking Tour of UP Manila

How does a university take shape?

In 1908, the University of the Philippines was established with an aspiration to promote higher learning for all Filipinos. Before its eventual growth into 8 constituent universities with 17 campuses nationwide, UP first found its home within the quiet suburbs of Ermita in Manila. From there, buildings would rise in the coming decades to house the first colleges and institutions of the emerging university.

This June 2026, as we celebrate 118 years of honor, excellence, and service, let us look back to the very beginning of our university’s history. Join us in a special UPM historical walking tour to revisit the spaces that bear witness to UP’s firsts. From the envisioned Medical Center of Manila to the bustling University Campus in Padre Faura, let us relive the historical moments that have shaped the university as we know it today.

IN PHOTOS: A seamless fusion of art, heritage, and botany greeted the audience at the University of the Philippines Manila’s Museum of a History of Ideas during its presentation of β€œTertulia sa Ermita”.

The cultural event served as the culminating activity of the 2026 International Flores De Mayo Festival and Conference, a celebration of biocultural heritage that included an exhibit of botanical paintings, an art workshop, lectures, a traditional Santacruzan, a bazaar, and an online painting workshopβ€”all woven into a beautiful narrative of Filipino identity.

Curator Dr. Honey Libertine Achanzar-Labor, museum director of the University of the Philippines Manila Museum of a History of Ideas, together with museum staff, met with outgoing PGH head chaplain Fr. Marlito β€œLito” Ocon at the UP Manila-Philippine General Hospital Chapel to discuss the collection of paintings created for the chapel by Bohol-based artist Joey Labrador.

The paintings draw inspiration from the different units of PGH, with each piece honoring a patron saint and reflecting themes of healing, compassion, and faith.

The productive conversation explored the meaningful connections between the museum and the PGH Chaplaincy, expanding and highlighting shared commitments to history, culture, spirituality, and public service, while opening opportunities for future collaborations and community-centered initiatives.
