𝘾𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙖 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙛 𝙈𝙤𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙣 𝙋𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙞𝙘 𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝 🩺

In the early 1900s, cholera outbreaks in Manila and other parts of the Philippines became one of the major public health challenges during the American colonial period. Caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, cholera spread through contaminated food and water, affecting communities and shaping new approaches to disease prevention.

The UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas features a volume of collected autopsy reports from 1912, 1913, 1916, and 1917, documenting deaths from cholera and other tropical diseases. Prepared by the Department of Pathology of the College of Medicine and Surgery, these reports were based on autopsies conducted at the Manila City Morgue and served as important learning materials for medical students.

The fight against cholera eventually led to improvements in sanitation, safe water systems, and disease surveillance—foundations of modern public health that continue to protect communities today.

As we observe the National Infection Prevention and Control Week and National Disaster Resilience Month, cholera’s history reminds us that evidence-based public health practices remain our strongest defense against infectious diseases.

𝙈𝙐𝙎𝙀𝙐𝙈 𝙐𝙋𝘿𝘼𝙏𝙀𝙎 | 𝙄𝙙𝙚𝙖𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙤𝙖𝙙: 𝙈𝙃𝙄'𝙨 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝 & 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙥 💡

The UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas recently conducted research and an institutional engagement visit to Baguio, Benguet, as part of its preparations for the museum's major exhibitions this October. Through a series of research activities, museum visits, workshops, and collaborative engagements, the team sought to strengthen institutional partnerships, broaden curatorial perspectives, and enrich the museum's research and exhibition development.

Led by Dr. Honey Libertine Achanzar-Labor, MHI Director and curator of the museum's upcoming exhibition on The Filipino section, the museum staff visited several cultural institutions to deepen their understanding of indigenous heritage, museum loan practices, and the legacy of H. Otley Beyer as the pioneer of the formal study of anthropology at the University of the Philippines.

The team visited Museo Kordilyera and the UP Baguio Cordillera/Northern Luzon Historical Archives, where they explored collections and archival resources that help preserve and interpret the cultural heritage of Northern Luzon. They also engaged with the Baguio Museum and the Tam-awan Village to learn about traditional and contemporary museum practice and community engagement approaches that may inform future MHI programs.

As part of the visit, the museum also held a professional development workshop led by Dr. Achanzar-Labor, centered on the UP guiding principles of “𝙃𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙧, 𝙀𝙭𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚”. Her lecture reaffirmed the museum's commitment to integrity, scholarly excellence, and public service as the foundation of its work.

This was followed by presentations from Education Officer Mark Christian Fidelino on service-oriented museum practice and Collections Officer Kamila del Rosario on urban ethnography and its contribution to advancing excellence in museum research.

Through such initiatives, the UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas continues to cultivate meaningful partnerships, strengthen its institutional practice, and advance research-driven, community-centered museum work in service of the University and the public.

How do you plan a city as vibrant and complex as Manila?

This Manila Day, the UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas highlights a rare printout of the Burnham Plan for Manila, part of the museum’s collections in The Secular section.

In 1904, American architect Daniel Hudson Burnham was commissioned by then Governor-General William Howard Taft to create a comprehensive development plan for Manila. After studying the city's topography, waterways, and emerging civic institutions, Burnham submitted his vision to the Philippine Commission in 1905, outlining a plan for future Manila that continues to shape discussions about urban planning, mobility, and public space more than a century later.

Burnham’s plan proposed new parks and parkways, an expanded street system, waterfront development, a university complex, and improved transportation routes along the Pasig River and surrounding esteros.

While Burnham originally envisioned the University of the Philippines in Santa Mesa, American colonial administrators later clustered the national university alongside the government center on Taft Avenue (then Calle Rizal), embedding UP within the capital’s civic core.

IN PHOTOS: In celebration of the UP Foundation Anniversary, the UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas opened its doors to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors from across the UP community for a week of shared learning and heritage.

Throughout the week, various offices across UP Manila, along with members of the public, joined guided museum tours and engaged with UPM-MHI’s permanent collection. As part of the celebration, the Foundation Committee also organized a heritage walking tour on June 17, highlighting historic campus buildings culminating the day at the museum.

Together, the UP community explored stories, ideas, and histories that have shaped the University—mapping connections between generations of Iskolars ng Bayan and the communities they continue to serve in and around the heart of Manila.

𝘾𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙢𝙨, 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 ⛪️

The UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas and Asilo de San Vicente de Paul, Inc. welcomed a meaningful day of learning and collaboration on heritage conservation practice at the Sor Asunción Ventura Museum (SAVM).

To celebrate the 140th anniversary of Asilo de San Vicente de Paul last year, Dr. Honey Libertine Achanzar-Labor, UPM-MHI director and UP Manila Professor, was invited to design the museum for their institution and curate its permanent collection. This was done with technical support from the entire UPM-MHI staff and assistance from some BA Philippine Arts student volunteers.

The visit to SAVM on 18 June 2026 was coordinated by UPM-MHI Education Officer Mark Christian Fidelino for Prof. Achanzar-Labor’s PhilArts 151 (Cultural Heritage Conservation) class, allowing UP Manila students enrolled in the class to access the SAVM collection and to attend an immersive lecture and engage in museum and heritage conservation practices.

The PhilArts 151 students gained firsthand insight into heritage conservation work and the care of ethnographic and historical collections.

The visit also included an immersion with Asilo Manila administrator Sr. Marites Bacani Buensuceso, DC, and Ms. Avegail Cruzana Maricano to discuss future plans, improvements, and preparations for the museum’s upcoming first anniversary after opening it in 2025, a collaborative initiative between the UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas, The Faura Project, and Asilo de San Vicente de Paul, Inc.

The UPM-MHI, The Faura Project, and the UP Manila BA Philippine Arts program, represented by curator Prof. Achanzar-Labor, continuously support the orphanage in fostering partnerships that connect heritage, education, and community social service to the people.

TINGNAN: Dinala ng The Foundations of a Filipino University: A Historical Walking Tour of UP Manila ang mga kalahok sa makasaysayang paglalakbay sa mga pook na nagsilbing saksi sa mga unang yugto ng Unibersidad ng Pilipinas (UP).
