“A lot of my work is about hidden authority and how that authority shapes us as human beings. As a person who is dyslexic, I’m always aware of my mistakes. There’s a feeling of righteousness that comes with correcting other people. A need to control other bodies. The idea of correction feeds the need of being pure. The works are about what it means to be pure, clean or hygienic.”

“Schimmige herinneringen, en dan toch: een helder contour. Handen of ogen of misschien een neus. Ik
denk aan dingen die van iedereen en niemand tegelijk zijn. Mijn moeders handen bijvoorbeeld, of de
herinnering aan mijn moeders handen.

Mist dus, mist in glas en mist op doek. Lagen groen over lagen groen en dan die twee figuren, als
opgetrokken uit de mist. Een vader en een kind. Die vallen ook onder de categorie van dingen die van
iedereen en niemand tegelijk zijn. Wat ik bedoel is: er is er maar eentje van jou of als je geluk hebt een
paar, maar de andere zijn van de anderen. Die van jou gaat maar één keer dood en die van de

Sonneveld’s work moves between the personal and the universal. Familiar images, family scenes, a hand holding another hand, flowers and landscapes, take on something elusive. Like memories themselves, they are at once familiar and blurred, close yet distant.

Marilyn Sonneveld’s new exhibition ‘the black bird was singing, the light was bright’, carries the salty scent of wind through the dunes. Images of long walks on the beach, of the red flush on the cheeks of a small boy holding his father’s hand, of the brisk breeze on the Wadden Islands, captured in many shades of blue, pink and purple.

NAP+ is officially open, find us in Booth 45, presenting works by afra eisma and Tobias Thaens.

Transformation and the shifting relationship between bodies and the environment associate the artists’ practices through oil painting, ceramics and textile. Thaens’ paintings move between organic forms, camouflage and imagined ecosystems; eisma works across textiles and ceramics to create tactile, immersive worlds that hold both vulnerability and strength. Together, their practices create a dialogue between the intimate and the otherworldly, where colour, material and form become ways of imagining different states of being.
