Sunday Book Highlight | Maria Roosen 'Maria's' 📚

Breasts of glass, ‘knipselhelden’, hand-knitted sunflowers, pen*ses dangling from a string, big and small watercolours, toilet pots decorated with hunting scenes, and many other images in 'Maria’s' reflect the artistic universe of Maria Roosen. Salacious, soft, cheeky and abrasive, this book contains work from 1998–2005, with highlights from further back, ranging from intimate to monumental gestures.

During Amsterdam Art Week, 18-22 November, there will be a festive opening week of the solo exhibition 'Poetic Justice' by patricia kaersenhout!

Who has the right to name a world? 'Poetic Justice' explores how language, image, and imagination can be instruments of both colonial power and healing. The title refers to a form of justice not administered by the courts, but by art: a symbolic rewriting of histories in which the voices of Indigenous and Black communities have been systematically erased.

Come and join us and the artist for the festive gallery night on Thursday 19 November from 5-9pm. On Friday 20 November at 4.30pm, kaersenhout will present an interactive performance alongside Winti priest Dwight Fransman and musician Vernon Chatlein. The exhibition will be on view until 12 July 2025.

The artist talk, 'Broersen & Lukacs: Somewhere, Elsewhere', will take place at Eye Filmmuseum on 3 November from 7–8.30 pm. The artists will introduce a selection of four of their films.

Margit Lukács and Persijn Broersen will reflect on the intricate relationship between culture and nature, driven by their interest in media, music, and technology. Working across film, installation, and performance, they unravel the origins and mythologies of real and fictional landscapes. Their process involves constructing virtual worlds combining live action, photography, and experimental digital animation, and collaborating with scientists, scholars, musicians, and choreographers.

Two of the works shown are currently on show at the exhibition 'Naturocene. Ways to Fall in Love with the Earth' at On the Inside. This exhibition is a collaboration between On the Inside and Eye.

Following the screening, Eye collection curator Simona Monizza and curator of 'Naturocene' Alessandra Leitempergher will interview the artists.

There are only a few weeks left to visit Theo Jansen's 'Strandbeesten Mortuarium' at the Kabeldistrict in Delft!

The exhibition follows Jansen’s experimental journey to realise his dream of building creatures that can one day live independently on the beach. The extinct specimens are displayed in chronological order as natural history objects. They range from the Gluton era (1990: the era of adhesive tape) to the Tenerium era (2023–2024: the era of holding on to one another). The exhibition tells the story of how the Strandbeests came to life, concluding with videos of these creatures in action on the beach.

You can visit 'Strandbeesten Mortuarium' until 5 November.

Maria Roosen's 'Borstentros' (2008) was featured in an article by Marsha Bruinen in De Volkskrant on 6 October.

"Als tiener was ik erdoor betoverd: de grote, glimmende borstentros die me opwachtte in het gras van Museum Arnhem. Nog steeds kun je er als bezoeker van de beeldentuin niet omheen: het warmgekleurde glas dat kunstenaar Maria Roosen tot sensuele vruchten liet blazen. Je zou denken dat ze, blootgesteld aan de warmte van de zon, steeds roder en rijper zouden worden, om uiteindelijk te verschrompelen. Maar iemand heeft op de pauzeknop gedrukt. De spanning die in 'Borstentros' (2008) zit, blijft onveranderd: het kunstwerk is een constante klap in het gezicht."

'Borstentros' is part of the permanent collection at Museum Arnhem and is on view in the museum's sculpture garden.

Opening today! Stéphanie Saadé is part of the exhibition 'Broodnodig- Van land, naar keuken en tafel' with 'Contemplating an old memory' (2017) at Stedelijk Museum Schiedam.

For 'Contemplating an old memory' Saadé creates a mould of a lentil seed and casts it in 24-carat gold. On the opening day, water is poured onto the original seed to allow it to sprout and grow. The seed's growth documents the passing of the exhibition. The cast and the growing plant are exhibited side by side.

The exhibition is on view until 14 March, 2027.

Maria Roosen's 'Groentekrans / Rosary (vegtables)' (2017) is part of '15 Mysteriën van de rozenkrans' at Het Noordbrabants Museum, on view until 25 October.

The exhibition brings together seventeenth-century paintings, including ones from St. Paul's Church in Antwerp that are being shown in the Netherlands for the first time, with works of contemporary art. The exhibition explores how memories, rituals, and personal stories are passed down from generation to generation. The encounter between the past and the present offers new insights into the centuries-old paintings and into how we give meaning to what we wish to preserve and remember today.

The exhibition coincides with Roosen's solo exhibition, 'EXPRESS', which is on view at AKINCI until 7 November.

Gluklya is part of the Changwon Sculpture Biennale taking place in Changwon, South Korea.

Gluklya is showing an installation consisting of the video 'Antigone update' and sculptures representing 'Chorus 1'. The sculptures appear as bodies overtaken by labor: dresses crowned with sewing machines instead of heads, embodiments of alienation.

Spaces shaped by Changwon's distinct histories and rhythms of everyday life become part of a citywide exhibition. Moving between artworks and sites, visitors are invited to experience the city anew through sculpture and discover the relationships and resonances that emerge from these encounters.

The Changwon Sculpture Biennale is on view until 15 November.
