The story behind Vincent van Gogh’s legacy is also the story of Johanna van Gogh-Bonger. After the death of her husband, Theo, in 1891, Johanna was left with their young son and a large collection of Vincent’s paintings.

Rather than letting his work disappear into obscurity, she dedicated her life to promoting Vincent’s art. She exhibited and sold his paintings, published the letters between Vincent and Theo, and helped make Vincent’s ideas and artistic vision known to a wider audience.

Her determination played a crucial role in turning Vincent van Gogh into the internationally celebrated artist we know today. Behind one of art history’s most famous names was a woman who refused to let his work be forgotten.

Part 5 | Sunflowers | Vincent van Gogh 🌻

Why did Vincent van Gogh paint the same flowers again and again? He created the Sunflower paitings in Arles between 1888 and 1889.

Van Gogh used the sunflower series to explore colour, light and emotion, experimenting with different shades of yellow inspired by the bright sunlight of southern France. Although the paintings look similar, each version is unique. The sunflowers also had a personal meaning: Van Gogh painted them to decorate the Yellow House in Arles, where he hoped to create an artists’ community with Paul Gauguin.

A little reminder from Vincent van Gogh: you don’t have to know how to do something before you start.
Van Gogh constantly challenged himself to learn skills he hadn’t mastered yet. He practised by actually doing, making mistakes and trying again.

His journey shows that progress doesn’t come from waiting until you’re “good enough.” It comes from being willing to be a beginner. Maybe the things you can’t do yet are exactly the things you should start practising. 🤍
