Being Nature with Dr. Thieu Besselink 🐾

Many people intuitively feel that something essential is missing in how we treat and experience nature, but how do we move forward with hope in times of collapse?

Join us on June 12th for an evening lecture about the ecological collapse, the crisis of being, and how to heal our relationship with the living world - and with ourselves.

From the Book of Nature, Paracelsus and Goethe to contemporary ecological thinkers, Besselink draws on the relational worldview of western hermetic traditions to imagine a path of genuine hope. You will leave with practical ways to locate personal hope in a time of loss, as well as a new understanding of your own place within a living landscape and how the western esoteric traditions give us the ingredients for relating to it.

About the speaker: Dr. Thieu Besselink is a professor at Utrecht University and founder of the Academy of Place, teaching and practicing eco-philosophy and regenerative development of landscapes, community, and society. This lecture offers an entry point into the ideas and practices that Besselink has developed over twenty years.

Last week we entered Gemini season, historically depicted through twins and conjunctions. Ruled by Mercury, the messenger, trickster, and intermediary between worlds, Gemini forms one expression of the mercurial mind (the other being Virgo). This sign is concerned with correspondence, exchange, duality, and the tension between apparent opposites: wholeness achieved through relation.

In Greek mythology, Gemini is embodied by Castor and Pollux, twin brothers divided between mortality and immortality, later placed among the stars together. The constellation’s two brightest stars still bear their names.

Gemini arrives as the first air sign in the zodiac cycle and brings a light energy of curiosity, movement, and wit. Now is a lovely time for conversation, intellectual pursuits, wandering thoughts, and learning something new. Happy Gemini season👯‍♀️

During the Second World War, Dutch poets, writers and musicians who were part of the resistance movement would write for small audiences, coming together secretly in private living rooms and farm houses to share their art. Writer Jan C. Hoekstra later commented on these gatherings as “little islands of freedom”.

Our new exhibition in the Grote Sael showcases a selection of clandestine printed matter produced during the war, an ode to the late antiquarian Wilma Schuhmacher and her collection. She joined the resistance movement herself at age sixteen, and continued collecting illegal books, leaflets, art and poetry for years to come. We’re proud to be able to put part of this incredible collection on view.

The carefully curated selection of dreamlike poetry is accompanied by beautiful - and often sensual - illustrations; signals of an unbroken spirit.

“An Ode to Wilma Schuhmacher” is accompanied in the hallway by a photo series by who documented the process of moving Schuhmacher’s collection out of her house following her death.

On view until June 28th — come visit🦢
