As part of ILHAM’s ongoing commitment to supporting regional art writing, and fostering networks across Southeast Asia, we are delighted to be hosting a two days writers’ workshop workshop entitled Ecologies, Vectors, Vicinities: Art writing across registers in Southeast Asia from 20 - 21 August 2026. The
workshop is co-convened by Carlos Quijon, Jr. and organised with support from SAM Funds for Arts and Ecology and Monsoon Southeast Asia Collection.

The assembly gathers writers across generations and across Southeast Asia to think together about writing practice. Discourses around textual production in Southeast Asia have been framed in terms of lack-lack of critics, lack of platforms
and publications or their unsustainability, lack of support or lack of infrastructure to sustain critical activity. Instead of rehearsing the prevalent discourse of lack, the workshop
prompts us to reframe the parameters of textual critical activity in the region.

11AM, 22 August - Discover The Bouquet and the Wreath (Rebirth) through a special curatorial walkthrough led by exhibition curator Roger Nelson.

2-5PM, 22 August - Discourses around textual production in Southeast Asia have been framed in terms of lack-lack of critics, lack of platforms and publications or their unsustainability, lack of support or lack of infrastructure to sustain critical activity. Instead of belaboring this lack, Ecologies, Vector, Vicinities proposes to recognize how, in the context of the region, notions of lack have forced and enabled practitioners to imagine different forms, registers, dispositions, and circulations of textual production. From this notion of lack, writing is transformed into dispersive efforts: online journals, zines, writing workshops as public programing, writing as a curatorial framework, to identify a few.

5PM, 22 August - ILHAM will be hosting the launching of the book Philippine Figurine: Image, Art, Ornament by art historian and curator Patrick Flores, organised in collaboration with the National Gallery of Singapore. Philippine Figurine is the newest title in the Art Writing series of NGS Press. Speakers at the launch will include Carlos Quijon, Jr., Eric Goh, and Patrick Flores.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last Saturday for Jo Kukathas’ talk which looked at the Malaysian theatre movement in the 60s and how artist- activists saw art as a way for society to move forward . From the futurist architecture to the modernist artwork to the socialist theatre, she reminded us that the 1960s were an important time, when artists saw themselves as architects of change. It was inspiring, and a wonderful reminder how important it is to create spaces for diverse narratives and stories to be told.
