This Indian carpet, dating from the first half of the 19th Century, reinterprets a decorative repertoire whose origins can be traced back to the celebrated Persian models of the Safavid period. Its monumental palmettes, floral vines and cloud-bands evoke the ornamental language developed in the workshops of Isfahan between the 16th and 17th Centuries, here reimagined through the lens of the Indian tradition. The result is a composition that testifies to both the continuity and the transformation of decorative forms shared between Persia and India over the course of centuries.

Drawing inspiration from the flowing botanical designs of Indian palampores, these embroidered panels opened a window onto distant worlds, where flourishing trees, exotic creatures and colourful birds came together in a celebration of nature and imagination. Once part of luxurious bed hangings, these textiles were more than decorative objects: they were symbols of prestige, craftsmanship and the desire to bring the wonders of faraway places into elite interiors.
