Gallery Moshe Tabibnia presents a refined selection of antique carpets, tapestries and textiles, brought together in a display that spans different periods, cultures and traditions.

Originating from different regions of Europe, the Mediterranean and Asia, from Persia and Anatolia to India and China, with examples from Egypt and Syria, the works span a period from mid 15th Century to the first quarter of the 19th Century.

In collaboration with .gallery, the display also includes artworks by some of the leading figures of Italian modern art, including Alberto Burri, Lucio Fontana, Emilio Vedova, Lino Tagliapietra, shown alongside exceptional antique carpets and textiles in a dialogue between different artistic languages, periods and materials.

The new display, on the ground floor and first floor of Gallery Moshe Tabibnia, features a selection of rugs, embroideries, and tapestries, dating from 18th to 19th Centuries, representing different textile traditions and geographic origins—from Anatolia to Persia, from Turkestan to China, and as far as the Caucasus and France.

This type of Anatolian rug is known as “Tintoretto”, named after the Venetian master who depicted it in two of his paintings. One of these, “The Discovery of the Body of Saint Mark”, can be admired at Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan. Within the dramatic setting of the scene, the saint lies upon a sumptuous carpet decorated with the characteristic “cloud-band” motif, which also appears as ornament in the spandrels of the present rug.

This Indian carpet, dating from the first half of the 19th Century, reinterprets a decorative repertoire whose origins can be traced back to the celebrated Persian models of the Safavid period. Its monumental palmettes, floral vines and cloud-bands evoke the ornamental language developed in the workshops of Isfahan between the 16th and 17th Centuries, here reimagined through the lens of the Indian tradition. The result is a composition that testifies to both the continuity and the transformation of decorative forms shared between Persia and India over the course of centuries.
