A downright bonanza of gold.

Jewel walking stick,18 kt gold octagonal milord-shaped k**b with gold-bearing quartz, United States, 1841.

Walking stick: jeweled walking stick, octagonal milord-shaped k**b in 18 kt gold with on the top a large central octagonal gold-bearing quartz and 8 oval lateral ones in different colors. Malacca wood cane. Metal tip This is a presentation stick to the owner, which began to appear on the market at the time of the California gold rush, from 1848-1868. They were generally made in two types, one with a k**b with a single quartz, the other with more stones in addition to the sides of the k**b, as in our case. They all reveal great refinement and a high degree of craftsmanship and have in common a quartz stone with visible veins of gold. They embody the peculiar American taste of the second half of the nineteenth century, with an exclusive quality and have never been mass-produced. This type of k**b shows detail and harmony of design such as the typical rich and intricate decorative engraving of the second half of the 20th century. United States of America circa 1850.

Jewel walking stick, signed Lazarus Pozen Witwe, Frankfurt Germany end 19th century.

Walking stick: a jeweled stick with a tactile L-shaped handle, played on the contrasts of 800/1000 silver and vermeil. Wide stepped silver arches surround niches in openwork vermeil depicting geometric shapes. The smooth and finely patinated curves of the silver are at the same time complemented and contrasted by the bright color of the openwork vermeil grid. At the two ends of the k**b, two black striated agates are set, carved depicting two eagles, one with its head and beak open, the other perched seen from behind. Ebony Macassar wood cane with bovine horn tip. Signed Lazarus Pozen Witwe. The workshop of Lazarus Pozen Witwe was a rare business: it was founded, owned and operated by a Jewish woman, Brendina Wetzlar Posen (1833-1901), widow of the rabbi and silversmith Lazarus Jacob Pozen (1803-1865). Four years after his death, Brenfina opened her own prosperous business in Frankfurt am Main and in 1880, her eldest son Jacob, joined the firm. By the late 19th century, the firm had become Europe’s largest supplier of Jewish objects and by 1900, its large workforce was producing some of the finest German silver. Upon Brendina’s death in 1901, management passed to her grandsons, Jakob Hermann and Moritz. In 1903, the firm was granted a royal warrant and opened a second branch in Berlin. The company was destroyed during Kristallnacht, the violent plundering of Jewish businesses in Germany and Austria, between November 9 and 10, 1938. The family immigrated to Great Britain and then to the United States. Frankfurt Germany late 19th century.

The monogram, with the first two letters of the Greek word “Christòs”

A Memento Mori in wood with Chrismon, monogram of Christ, Italy end of 17th century.

A Memento Mori in wood with Chrismon, monogram of Christ. Valuable sculpture in fruit wood in almost true-to-life measurements, sculpted with art and finished with a wealth of details. The wood was covered with a thin layer of pellet and finished in color. Immediately above the forehead, in correspondence with the anterior neonatal fontanel, the CHRISMON is painted in purple red. The monogram of Christ or Chi Rho (or CHRISMON) is a combination of letters from the Greek alphabet, which form an abbreviation of the name of Christ. Solar in nature, often inscribed in a circle with multiple rays reminiscent of the cosmic wheel deriving from the ancient solar emblems of Egypt. The symbol consists of two large overlapping letters, the ‘X’ and the ‘P’. They correspond, respectively, to the Greek letter ‘χ’ (‘chi’, which reads kh, aspirated) and ‘ρ’ (‘rho’, which reads r). These two letters are the initials of the word ‘Χριστός’ (Khristòs ), the name of Jesus, which in Greek means “anointed” and translates the Hebrew “messiah”. On the sides of these two letters, there are very often two others: one ‘α’ and one ‘ω’, alpha and omega, the first and last letter of the Greek alphabet, used as a symbol of the beginning and the end. Italy, early 17th century.
