ON VIEW: “Controcorrente” by Uwe Wittwer at Monica De Cardenas Milano

In “Controcorrente”, Uwe Wittwer brings together different visual traditions, from ethnographic photography to European art history, exploring the connections between artistic representation and colonial expansion.

The exhibition takes its title from the journeys upstream along the great rivers of Africa, Asia and the Americas. These waterways become a metaphor for a journey back through the archives, uncovering the circumstances in which images were produced and the narratives they continue to convey.

For his first solo exhibition in Italy, Uwe Wittwer revisits works and subjects from art history, translating them into a contemporary painterly language. Classical compositions reappear transformed, altered and newly charged, establishing a dialogue between their historical sources and the present.

We are pleased to announce “Controcorrente”, Uwe Wittwer’s first solo exhibition in Italy at Monica De Cardenas Milano.

Drawing on photographic and ethnographic archives, Wittwer’s new body of work explores the relationship between image, memory and history, questioning the authority of historical images and the structures of power embedded within them.

Open: "Magnolia" with Emilio Gola among others @ Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milano

L'Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera presenta la prima edizione di MAGNOLIA, una nuova rassegna biennale destinata a valorizzare le opere di 17 giovani artisti emergenti che hanno concluso il loro percorso di studi a Brera.

Per l'occasione, la suggestiva Ex Chiesa di San Carpoforo nel cuore del quartiere di Brera si trasforma in uno spazio espositivo aperto alla città.

Il titolo MAGNOLIA richiama il grande albero nel cortile interno del complesso braidense, cuore pulsante della vita degli studenti e simbolo di un talento che si rinnova a ogni fioritura.

ON VIEW: “The Human Stain” at Monica De Cardenas Milano

Across “The Human Stain”, the image is never entirely fixed. Figures emerge, dissolve, and remain partially unresolved, inviting viewers into a space shaped as much by memory and imagination as by observation.

Whether through omission, transformation, abstraction, or distortion, the works in the exhibition resist definitive readings. Instead, they open a field of associations where recognition and uncertainty coexist, and where meaning is continuously negotiated between the painting and the viewer.

Bringing together works by Guy Yanai, Ivan Seal, Gideon Rubin, Alessandro Pessoli, Christopher Orr, Erin Lawlor, Emilio Gola and Michael Ajerman, the exhibition explores painting as a site of projection – where what remains unsaid can be as powerful as what is revealed.
