ON VIEW: Guy Yanai at Monica De Cardenas Zuoz

Guy Yanai’s paintings often begin with images that belong to the visual fabric of everyday life — personal photographs, cinema, literature and fragments of contemporary culture. Through painting, they are removed from their original context and reconstructed, becoming at once familiar and strangely distant.

In these works, figures emerge through sharp lines, compressed depth and luminous fields of color, suspended between direct experience and mediated imagery.

ON VIEW IN ZUOZ
Guy Yanai’s solo exhibition is on view at our Zuoz gallery. Come and visit!

Yanai’s painting stems from a process of selecting and translating images, isolated from their original contexts and reconstructed through a rigorous formal grammar of sharp lines, compressed depth and saturated colors. In this process, the ceaseless flow of images that characterizes contemporary experience slows into contemplation. Everyday life thus becomes a space of focus and permanence, where the familiar takes on an unexpected and poetic quality.
On view through 5 September 2026.

OPENING: Saturday 25 July, 5 pm

We are delighted to announce the opening of Guy Yanai’s first solo exhibition in Switzerland at our gallery in Zuoz.

Yanai’s paintings transform the familiar into images of quiet intensity. Through luminous colour, distilled compositions and a rigorous formal language, everyday scenes become spaces of contemplation, where memory and perception converge. Situated between direct observation and mediated imagery, his works invite a slower way of looking, reaffirming painting’s enduring ability to reshape our experience of the ordinary.

We look forward to welcoming you!

Monica De Cardenas Gallery is located in Chesa Albertini, an Engadine house built around 1300 and renovated in 2006 by architect Hans-Jörg Ruch to serve both as art gallery and a residence. Over the centuries, the building had undergone various alterations, but most of its original structure had been preserved. The successive alterations were reversed, allowing the original rooms to be revelead once more. The medieval timber walls were uncovered and restored, while all newly added elements are contemporary and clearly distinguishable, creating a fascinating dialogue between old and new. The former stables in the basement, as well as the former hayloft, now serve as exhibition spaces, while the traditional Stube is used as the gallerist’s office. The kitchen and dining room remain in their original locations. On the upper floor there are three wooden sleeping chambers set within a very tall space that extends all the way to the roof.

ON VIEW: “The Human Stain” at Monica De Cardenas Milano

Across “The Human Stain”, the image is never entirely fixed. Figures emerge, dissolve, and remain partially unresolved, inviting viewers into a space shaped as much by memory and imagination as by observation.

Whether through omission, transformation, abstraction, or distortion, the works in the exhibition resist definitive readings. Instead, they open a field of associations where recognition and uncertainty coexist, and where meaning is continuously negotiated between the painting and the viewer.

Bringing together works by Guy Yanai, Ivan Seal, Gideon Rubin, Alessandro Pessoli, Christopher Orr, Erin Lawlor, Emilio Gola and Michael Ajerman, the exhibition explores painting as a site of projection – where what remains unsaid can be as powerful as what is revealed.
