Travel around 10th century York, experiencing what it was like living in the city. The sights, sounds and even the smells of the Viking Age are brought vividly back to life as you journey back 1,000 y

ears. At JORVIK Viking Centre you are standing on the site which revealed some of the most astounding discoveries in modern archaeology.Get up-close with some of the most beautiful and rare Viking artefacts in the world, from delicate earrings and socks to frying pans and padlocks and even a fossilised Viking poo! Dig deeper into the Viking story of Yorkusing the latest in cutting-edge technology located throughout the centre and the opportunity to handle real artefacts whilst talking to our friendly Viking hosts. Please note: To help ensure the safety of all visitors and staff, additional security measures are currently in place. Bags will be searched upon entry, and the maximum permitted bag size is 38cm × 30cm. Visitors who do not comply with security procedures will be refused admission. We kindly ask that all pushchairs are emptied of bags and accessories before entry so they can be checked and that visitors keep their bags and personal items on them for the duration of their visit.

Today marks 50 years since the beginning of the Coppergate Dig!

The excavation still shapes how we understand Viking-age York. What began as an archaeological dig laid the foundations for one of the UK’s most iconic attractions, bringing the sights, sounds and smells of 10th century York to life for millions of visitors over the past 50 years. ⚒️🏺
