York Army Museum

York Army Museum Award-winning regimental museum of The Royal Dragoon Guards &The Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire. Our story is part of everyone's history.

The York Army Museum houses over 300 years of history, telling the stories of The Royal Dragoon Guards, The Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire and The Yorkshire Regiment. These regiments have fought in nearly all the British Army’s campaigns – actions which have helped to shape our world. The York Army Museum brings to life the histories of these Regiments and their antecedents in a moder

n, interactive setting. YAM strives to conserve and protect the heritage of our Regiments and create opportunities for the general public to engage with military history. Our Museum tells the personal, inspirational stories of regional soldiers in order to connect with our local community. YAM has recently undergone a substantial refurbishment, enabled by generous support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and is now in the process of developing an exciting new education and events programme. The York Army Museum now reflects our regimental histories from the last 330 years, 1685 to the present day. Come and explore what your York Army Museum has to offer

We are delighted to announce that York Army Museum has been shortlisted for the British Library's Food on Display Award 2026.

The award celebrates the most innovative, engaging and exciting use of food in exhibitions across the UK and Republic of Ireland, recognising organisations that use food to tell stories, explore cultural histories, and highlight social and sustainability challenges.

Our shortlisted exhibition, which commemorated the 80th anniversary of VE-Day, explored the significance of food and drink during wartime. Through sensory, playful and accessible interpretation, the exhibition revealed what sustained soldiers on the frontline and families on the home front, while highlighting the creativity, resilience and community spirit that shaped everyday life during conflict.

We are honoured to be shortlisted alongside two outstanding exhibitions:

Elizabeth Gaskell's House – Victorian Christmas Experience
Food Museum, Suffolk – School Dinners

The awards ceremony takes place this evening, and we are proud that our Shared Tables, Shared Stories has been recognised among such inspiring projects.

Congratulations to our fellow finalists, and thank you to everyone who helped bring this exhibition to life.

Royal Yorkshire Regiment History #6
The Victorian era was a time of empire, exploration, and constant movement for the British Army. The Yorkshire regiments were no exception, serving across the globe in postings that ranged from peaceful garrisons to fierce campaigns.
The West Yorkshire Regiment spent much of the century in India, earning the Royal Tiger badge for its long service there between 1807 and 1831. They fought at Bhurtpore (1826), served in Canada, endured the harsh winters of Nova Scotia, and later fought in the Crimea, including the siege of Sevastopol. They also served in the West Indies, Burma, Aden, and the Andaman Islands.
The East Yorkshire Regiment also travelled widely. They served in Canada, Ceylon, Gibraltar, Malta, and Nova Scotia, reflecting the global responsibilities of the Victorian Army. Their deployments were often long, sometimes lasting a decade or more, and required enormous adaptability.
These years also saw major reforms. The Cardwell and Childers reforms reorganised the Army, created county depots, and in 1881 gave the regiments their modern titles:
The Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorkshire) Regiment
The East Yorkshire Regiment
By the end of the Victorian era, both regiments were deeply rooted in Yorkshire yet unmistakably global in experience.
