What a fabullous couple of days at Pateley Bridge — thank you so much to everyone who stopped to chat, looked through the paintings, picked up cards and prints, or took a painting home with you.

It’s always rather special seeing a painting leave for its new home, and these are a few of the pieces that found theirs over the weekend.

A huge thank you too to Pateley Makers Yard, who provide such a lovely opportunity for artists and makers to show and sell their work. It’s very much appreciated.

I’ve been busy finishing some new paintings, and these will be coming with me to Pateley Bridge Summer Makers Fair this weekend.

They’re part of my latest landscape work, inspired by the colours, light and wide open spaces of Northumberland and North Yorkshire.

I’ll have these with me alongside a selection of other original paintings, prints and cards — so if you’re in the area, do come along and have a browse and say hello.

Fancy spending a day experimenting with watercolour and creating your own atmospheric summer woodland?

On my Summer Woods Watercolour Workshop on Saturday 29 August, we'll explore some lovely, playful techniques including masking fluid, spattering and working with a limited colour palette to build layers of light, texture and colour.

I'll take you through the painting step by step, with demonstrations and plenty of individual help along the way – so you don't need lots of watercolour experience to take part.

It's a relaxed, creative day in a small and friendly group, and all materials are provided.

A few places are still available.

What if your next painting didn't have to become a painting at all?

I've just written the latest post in my One-Hour Painting Projects series, and this one is a little different.

Instead of painting a landscape, we're simply painting a circle.

The enso circle comes from Japanese Zen tradition and is painted in one flowing brushstroke. It's not about creating the perfect circle – quite the opposite. It's about slowing down, letting go of perfection, and enjoying the simple act of putting brush to paper.

I have to admit, I don't follow the tradition completely... I can't resist adding a little spatter and a splash of colour! 😊

It's a lovely exercise if you've got an hour to yourself this week. Whether you're completely new to watercolour or you've been painting for years, it might just remind you why you picked up a brush in the first place.

I have a feeling this will become one of the gentle warm-up exercises we'll use on future Omara Retreats too.

If you decide to have a go, I'd love to see your circles. Pop a photo in the comments or tag me in your painting.

Happy painting:)

Sometimes the most valuable thing you can paint isn't a landscape or a flower.Sometimes it's simply a circle. The Japanese enso is a circle painted in one continuous brushstroke. Traditionally associated with Zen practice, it isn't intended to be perfect. In fact, the beauty often lies in its imperfe...

Yesterday I headed up onto the North York Moors with a sketchbook, a bottle of ink and a handful of Inktense blocks.

Instead of reaching straight for my brushes, I used whatever was growing around me.

Fern stems. Heather. Seed heads. Twigs.

Each one left a different mark, reminding me that drawing doesn't have to begin with the "right" tools. Sometimes the landscape offers everything you need.

There's something wonderfully freeing about letting go of control and seeing what happens. Some marks worked beautifully, some barely showed up, and a few were complete surprises. That's all part of the conversation.

These little field notes aren't about making finished paintings. They're about paying attention, collecting ideas and staying playful.

Have you ever tried drawing with something you've found in nature? I'd love to hear what you've experimented with.
