With 900 years of history to discover, a visit to Helmsley Castle is the perfect activity for a fantastic day out! Set on a rocky outcrop overlooking the River Rye within the picturesque town of Helmsley, the imposing remains of Helmsley Castle still dominate the town’s skyline. Did you know? 🤔💭

That on 6th September 1644, the legendary Sir Thomas Fairfax drew a circle of steel around Helmsley Castle with cannons. For the next three months after that, no one went in, and no one came out. The castle's legendary defences were finally put to the ultimate test. ⚔️

On this day 382 years ago, the people of Helmsley Castle have already been in a siege for over a month. The weather is starting to get colder, supplies are getting lower, would you be able to do it?

🍂 Season changes 🍂

Now that the clocks have gone back for the autumn, we have changed our opening hours. ⏰️

We are now open until 4pm, with last admission at 3:30pm.

❗️As of Monday 2nd November, we will only be opening on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10am until 4pm.❗️

Make sure to check our website and this page before setting off for your visit. Now we are getting into our stormier season, we may see some unexpected closures.🌪 But, as always, we will always do whatever we can to prevent that.

⚠️ Site Closure ⚠️

Helmsley Castle will be closing earlier today, Saturday 24 October 2026, due to dangerously high winds. We will be closed from 2pm, with last admission at 1:30pm.

We will be closed all day tomorrow, Sunday 25 October 2026. If you have paid for your tickets for tomorrow, we'll refund you within 10 working days. This will happen automatically, so you do not need to contact us.

We always do everything we can to avoid unexpected closures like this and we're really sorry to disappoint you. We hope you sill be able to visit us on another day soon.

Did you know?

That if you stand on the outer ditch facing the West Range, you can see many different phases of history as the castle was developed. ⏳️

For example, you can see the 12th century curtain wall, the 13th century West Tower and 16th century mansion windows. 🏰

A shot in the dark! 🏹💥

During the long siege of 1644, the Parliamentarian commander Sir Thomas Fairfax was nearly killed when a Royalist musket ball hit him in the shoulder right here at the castle. He survived, but the scar remained a reminder of Helmsley's defiance.

Stand where the cannons roared and history was written in lead.

Have you visited Helmsley Castle and wondered why the chapel was built at such an awkward angle within the courtyard? 🤔💭

This is because churches were traditionally built on an east-to-west alignment. The entrance sits at the west end, and the sanctuary and altar sits at the east end. This allowed worshippers to pray facing the rising sun and Jerusalem.

This strict alignment means that the chapel nearly touches the east tower, and makes our castle incredibly unique.

Come visit and make sure to pick up a guide book to learn more about this chapel. ⛪️

Where better to retire than at Helmsley Castle? 🏰

The 2nd Duke of Buckingham (1628 - 1687) led an eventful, scandalous life. After James II's coronation in 1685, to everyone's surprise, Buckingham retired from court life to his estate, Helmsley Castle. It appeared that he felt much happier in Yorkshire where he could farm, write and hunt.🦌 His colourful life came to an end in at Kirkbymoorside.

Looking at Helmsley Castle and the beautiful surrounding Yorkshire landscape, can we blame him for retiring here?
