Archive Photo of the Week: SS John Bowes

Designed and built by Charles Palmer at his Jarrow shipyard, launched in 1852. The SS John Bowes was a revolutionary iron hulled, steam propelled collier which used water as ballast. Where the average journey by sailing collier was around a month, this was reduced to less than a week’s round trip, speeding up the export of the coal arriving at Jarrow Staithes from the Bowes Railway system.
