Vane represents the work of a number of artists, both from across the UK and internationally, as well as showing the work of invited artists in collaboration with other galleries. Established in 1997, Vane operates a gallery space, as well as a flexible workspace for artists to develop new work. Vane represents a group of critically engaged artists from the North East of England, across the UK, Eu

rope and the USA through projects at the gallery and elsewhere. The gallery exhibition programme also provides a platform for the work of invited artists at all career stages, often working in partnership with other regional, national, and international galleries, festivals and guest curators, including hosting projects developed by artists themselves. These are accompanied by a series of talks, performances, workshops and other events. Beyond the gallery, Vane has presented projects across the UK and internationally, including in Denmark, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA. The gallery directors are Paul Stone and Christopher Yeats.

People and Place: Creative Relay 2026
Sunday 13 September 2026 10am - 3pm

‘People and Place: Creative Relay’ is a free, community-led celebration to mark the AJ Bell Great North Run 2026, the route of which passes right outside the front door of Vane gallery at Orbis Community on the High Street in Gateshead town centre. Around 60,000 runners took part and over 200,000 spectators cheered them on at the AJ Bell Great North Run 2025.

The event provides a welcoming and safe creative space for local people, visitors and Great North Run spectators to come together, connect and celebrate Gateshead’s community spirit.

Workshop artists will assist participants to create and colour their own Great North Run figure. Starting with simple figure templates, they’ll be encouraged to experiment with colour, pattern and detail, with the artists offering ideas, guidance and support throughout the process. Each person can make the figure their own, creating a unique character inspired by the people, movement and energy of the Great North Run. As the workshop develops, individual figures will come together to form a colourful collective installation celebrating the creativity and community of Gateshead.

A big thank you to everyone who came to the preview reception for ‘Care / Work’ on Wednesday 8 July.

‘Care / Work’ is an exhibition of work by recent Northumbria University graduate, North East based artist, Nayeema Ahmed. A British-Bangladeshi artist whose work is rooted in an exploration of femininity and labour, her work spans a range of media and is often inventive in its nature. Growing up in a culture in which art is discouraged has influenced Ahmed’s playful outlook – with non-standard media common throughout her work. ‘Care / Work’ is presented by GemArts and Vane as part of Masala Festival 2026.

GemArts’ award-winning Masala Festival 13-19 July for its 10th Anniversary, bringing a vibrant mix and blend of the finest South Asian arts and culture to the North East.

The exhibition continues until Saturday 1 August 2026.

Dollcraft
Thursday 18 June 2026 1-9pm

Dollcraft is a ‘crafternoon’ of q***r creativity and community brought to you by North East trans drag collective Dollhaus at Vane gallery. Make your own piece to express yourself: bunting, pennants, placards, t-shirts, tote bags, and more. Throughout the day local talent will be sharing their knowledge and skills. Whether you want to celebrate or protest, there will be something for you to take away. All materials will be provided but if you have a special clothing item you want customised then bring it along! Activities will be suitable for all ages. In the evening, from 5pm, we will be hosting a community celebration in the Orbis Community courtyard with a pay bar available!

Dollcraft is part of OUT North East’s Summer of Pride Festival. Taking place over June for official Pride Month, Summer of Pride Festival brings colour, creativity and connection to Sunderland, South Tyneside and Gateshead. It’s a bold, joyful celebration of LGBTQ+ communities - and everyone is welcome.

The Late Shows 2026 at Vane
