The late Milly Thompson’s relaxed, indulgent visual style portrays everything from cellulite and sunbathing to lobster and ripened tomatoes in My Body Temperature is Feeling Good. Her work playfully reappropriates the exoticised and eroticised female n**e, portraying middle-aged bodies in vivid, sun-bleached hues.

Foundation Press: Starting Lines is both a celebration of risograph printing and an exploration of how the act of creative making is open to all, inviting contributions to their vibrant changing display of drawings, prints and publications.

Both exhibitions see their final day at Baltic this Sunday 30 August.

Baltic Senior Curator, Emma Dean, gives deeper insight into Descent – a work by Chitra Ganesh presented in the exhibition Journey to the Great Below, giving physical form to the ancient Mesopotamian myth of the goddess Inanna’s descent into the underworld.

“With this sculpture, I particularly enjoy the uncanniness of the oversized, fleshy, remarkably lifelike feet, which are quite unnerving when you first see them. The snakeskin patterning on the treads of the staircase evokes the shedding of skin – a visual metaphor for Inanna's transformation and renewal.

The production of the work was a truly international endeavour: the feet were scanned at Scannerworks in New York and 3-D printed at Newcastle University Fine Art Casting Workshop, while the staircase was fabricated by Stator Made in Gateshead and the plinth was built by our technical team here at Baltic.

It has been exciting to follow the evolution of Chitra's new commission, from her initial concept drawings to the finished sculpture, and to see visitors' reactions as they encounter the work.”

We caught up with our Head of Exhibitions, Niomi Fairweather, who has worked closely on bringing the vision of Tish Murtha & Kuba Ryneiwicz: Close to Home to life at Baltic...

"There’s something special for me about the series Cornered Study and the relationship between the artist, studio, and subject. Working with Kuba and hearing the stories behind the images, you get a real sense of the time, care, and trust that sit behind each photograph.

These two photographs show different sides of the series, while both speak to the intimacy and freedom at the heart of Kuba’s practice. They reflect the close relationships he builds with his subjects, creating space for something personal and unguarded.

I know that care continues in the darkroom, where Kuba processes each image by hand. I haven’t been lucky enough to witness him working away in the darkroom, but hearing him talk so passionately about the process, and how precious the photographs are when he takes them out of the box to show you, is a real privilege. There’s always an element of risk in developing a photograph, you only really know what you have when the image appears on the paper. It’s something I really respect and love about analogue photography.

For me, these are two of my favourite images in Close to Home. They offer a glimpse into the intimacy, trust, and process that make Cornered Study so compelling."

Baltic is pleased to announce it will present Seeds, Stones, and Future Bones, the first major exhibition in a UK public gallery by the artist collective Keiken (経験) opening 19 September 2026.

Keiken (経験), meaning ‘experience’ in Japanese, is an artist collective led by Hana Omori that takes a collaborative approach to creating immersive worlds through embodied storytelling, empathetic technologies, and world-building.

The exhibition presents Morphogenic Angels: Chapter 1, a science-fiction, single-player, action-adventure game, alongside sculptural and newly-commissioned sound work. Set within in a site-specific installation environment conceived for Baltic, Keiken’s works explore questions of consciousness, transformation and the boundaries of human experience.

Ella Murtha, daughter of celebrated documentary photographer, Tish Murtha, discusses Tish’s photography collection Save Scotswood Works in the new Baltic Bites video.

Save Scotswood Works is a collection of photographs that document the campaign against the closure of the factory in 1979 and the communities directly affected by it. The collection is shown, for the first time together, alongside works from the series Elswick Kids, Elswick Revisited and Youth Unemployment.

The exhibition Close to Home honours Tish’s vision and the continued stewardship of her archive. Her images remain a vital record of working-class experience and a powerful call to acknowledge the inequalities that persist today.

Close to Home also features a newly commissioned body of work by Newcastle–based artist Kuba Ryniewicz.
