The Schützenpanzer Marder 1A3 entered service with the West German Army in the 1970s. It has since been upgraded several times, receiving better night sights and a MILAN anti-tank missile launcher.

Infantry Fighting Vehicles like this are intended to carry infantry, just like Armoured Personnel Carriers, but they also have greater mobility, protection and firepower.

This gives the infantry the option to stay on board right up to the enemy positions and better withstand enemy fire. The larger gun on an IFV means provides heavier fire support. however, the trade-off is that IFVs can carry fewer infantry.

Our particular vehicle is an A3 model. The A3 dates from the late 1980s and has thicker armour on the front and sides, and more space for equipment – but, being heavier, it proves slower.

The Soviet KV-2 was developed following the Winter War - when Finnish bunkers stymied the Red Army, they reasoned that a mobile artillery piece could flush them out.

The tall turret however made the tank heavier and slower, and its high silhouette made it an easy target.

Furthermore, when Operation Barbarossa began, the Red Army was on the defensive, not destroying bunkers. This left the KV-2 an interesting concept, with almost no use in practice.

Australians.

They’re the only Allied nation to reject the M4 Sherman. More than once, they’ve used their tanks very differently to how they were designed. Yet somehow, they’ve almost always been successful.

So, why do the Australians use tanks so differently to everybody else?

A recent addition to our collection, this Panzerjager G13 is currently undergoing various checks ahead of joining our running fleet. We hope to see it in the arena at some of next year’s events here at The Tank Museum.

The 2S25 Sprut is a tank destroyer, or light tank, developed in the early 1990s by the Russian Volgograd Tractor Plant.

It was intended for airborne forces, and would give them the same firepower as a tank in a much lighter vehicle. This was achieved, it has essentially the same 125mm gun as the T-72, T-80 and T-90 but at 18 tonnes is less than half the weight. Only 24 were built.
