Crass, Walthamstow Youth Centre 25/09/78

On the 25/09/1978 - a month before recording ‘Feeding of the 5000’ - Crass & Annie Anxiety played Walthamstow Youth Centre on Markhouse Road.

Did anyone here go? Who organised it?
Pete at #SmallWonderRecords tipped off a few customers that his new signings were playing just down the road but it was barely advertised, if at all.

Thanks to Pete from local punk band, The Snails, for the tip-off on the date...the gig was on his 14th birthday!!
Paul Jenner remembers it as a brilliant gig, marred only by the arrival of Teddy boys outside the venue looking for trouble.

UPDATE: looks like they played again in 80? with Poison Girls as support

The Wall - punk band

Andy Griffiths (The Wall) died of pancreatic cancer last weekend. I was lucky enough to talk to Andy last year about the early years with Small Wonder and he couldn't have been more helpful and friendly.
Thoughts go out to his family and friends.

"We were going to see Siouxsie and The Clash and forming and swapping between bands. Then in my second year at college, we formed The Wall and it just stepped up a level because Ian (Lowery) was such an amazing lyricist and songwriter.
Punk was brilliant because I didn't have to be very good. It was, buy a guitar and play, and in fact, I started on the bass because it was even easier than the guitar because I didn't have to learn any chords.
Ian would come in with lyrics and Joe and I would work on the basslines. 'New Way' is quite bass-driven really with that reggae influence."

Pancreatic Cancer UK has lots of information or you can donate too - https://www.justgiving.com/pcuk

To all Griffs lovely friends who have been with us in spirit throughout his battle with pancreatic cancer,
Griff passed away on Sunday morning on August 16th having outlived his prognosis with his f**k-off tumours by 7 months. He died at home after 3 weeks of great struggle and stoicism. He never complained and always said “we are doing the best we can”.
He was a true friend, an inspirational teacher, the best dad in the world, mischievous and clever and a font of inane facts. He was brilliant in so many aspects of his life: music, art, sailing, surfing, creating a beautiful home for Grace and me. He was dearly loved by everyone he knew. Life without Griff is unimaginable but he leaves a legacy of infinite memories of laughter and singing and joy. He would be chuffed to know he died on the same day as Elvis and Aretha Franklin.
His last wish is that you all raise awareness about Pancreatic cancer because it is the most underfunded cancer for its catastrophic prognosis with a mean survival rate of only 3 months, and the symptoms of which are terrible. Griff loved life and had so many adventures yet to live. Thank you for all your wonderful messages throughout his illness which gave him great pride and joy.
Please raise a glass to your dear friend when you read this, vowing to spread the pancreatic word, giving money to pancreatic research if you can, and above all cherishing his memory, with best wishes from Cath and Grace ###

It's a bit of a cliche but The Rose & Crown in Walthamstow is more than just a pub. It's part of the community and it's in trouble (as of course are many businesses).

It's costing 30K a month just to keep the pub closed!
Landlords Stonegate Pub Company (who recently bought rivals Ei Publican Partnerships for 1.27 billion pounds) want 100% of the rent paid during closure.

Times are tough but if you've ever sweated at a gig upstairs (anyone who attended #SmallWonderRecords Revisited), attended the excellent Red Imp Comedy Club or theatre, or just supped a pint, then please consider buying a 'virtual pint' through their crowdfunder.

'I Stand Before You' is one standout track... possibly from a demo session commissioned by Pete Stennett, sometime after the first album, and recorded in The Cravats rehearsal room with an 8-track mobile studio. The lyrics were written by the late Dave Bennet.

"One of my favourite releases on Small Wonder, you can tell that by the fact I had the B-side at 33rpm so I could fit both tracks on. Shouldv'e been a bigger record but for whatever reason Peel never took to it and his support was key to selling records back then. But I loved it, the lyrics, the music..."

Two of #SmallWonderRecords premier recording artists at #WalthamForest's only #NewWave venue.
Leyton Buzzards & The Carpettes at The Red Lion E11 42 years ago today (1978).

Neil Thompson from The Carpettes posted this: "We were down London recording the Small Wonder single. We were originally booked to play the Vortex when we were down - supporting Menace - but it closed down that week !! the Buzzards had a bit of a local following and had just recorded their first single for Small Wonder, '19 and mad'. We went down ok - not brilliant (everyone was there to see the Buzzards !!) and it's the only time (thankfully) that I've ever been spat at during a gig - when I came off stage I had spit on my shirt and spit on the neck of my guitar 😖😖- to this day I don't know if that meant they liked us or hated us 😳🤣"

Thanks to Colin from Fair Dukes - Walthamstow's Punk/New Wave Zine at the time

#OTD Sept 8 ‘79: #Bauhaus manager Graham Bentley drove down to #SmallWonderRecords to pick up one of the first boxes of their debut single ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’ from Pete Stennett.
That night, Bauhaus played #ThePaddock in Harpole and the audience could nab the Bela 12”...probably the only copies outside of the shop at that point.

40 years since the World's First Science Fiction Music Festival #Futurama 79 featuring #SmallWonderRecords' Punishment of Luxury(although technically they were on United Artists by then)

It's 40 years since the 'World's First Science Fiction Music Festival', Futurama took place in a former tram shed, Queens Hall, in Leeds (Sept 8th/9th 1979)
The incredible line-up featured PiL, Punilux, Joy Division, Hawkwind, The Fall, Cabaret Voltaire and many many more...

On September the 6th Punishment of Luxury return to Leeds, almost 40 years to the day, for a gig at Brudenell Social Club.

Here's Neville Luxury's recollections of the night...👇
'In the beginning of the gig, there was darkness and water covered the surface of the floor and in time there was light in the form of lasers courtesy of the kind and very helpful Hawkwind.
Watching Joy Division was a good experience which was better than when we walked into the dressing room. There were two portacabin type structures and we just noticed the first letter P on the sign so we boldly entered and entered where Punilux had never gone before and into a new and strange world….and it was cold and hostile and the inhabitants did not seem inclined to communicate …this was first indication that we were in wrong place.
Of course we had landed in the land of PiL and their image was evident on and off the stage.
We had a great gig although the light eventually began to diminish from behind us during our encore, apparently because of the preparation of the next act who were the people we encountered in the dressing room.
Their performance was excellent and I was impressed by John Lydon’s approach which to me seemed like a combining of a Jack Shepard play with a Bertolt Brecht effect. in any event it was unique and original.
When the gig was over the light eventually settled on the waters above the black plain and we realised that we were amongst a large crowd and we had all experienced an end of a decade event and beginning of a new Futurama. Created by John F Keenan

Happy 40th to #Bauhaus's classic 'Bela Lugosi's Dead'.
Here's David J & Kevin Haskins recalling a nerve wracking trip to see Pete Stennett in Walthamstow, after everyone else had turned it down for being too long!
In early September 1979 #SmallWonderRecords released all 9 minutes and 36 seconds of this monster on 12". It topped the alternative charts for years, selling hundreds of thousands of (many coloured) vinyl in the process.

In #Turin to talk to Mick, Jeff and Vince about Cockney Rejects signing to #SmallWonderRecords 40 years ago.

Mick Geggus: When we turned up I bet Pete thought, 'oh for f**ks sake what have we got here', or that we was going to rob him but he was courteous and he knew a good thing when he heard it and that ear served him well, with The Cure, Patrik Fitzgerald and all the other bands.
Out of all the record labels we were on, that fella actually paid us! He was an honest man. That label should be revered because he did a lot for music and he did a lot for music in East London because there wasn't practically anything going on there. There was Pete Stennett in Walthamstow and there was Terry Murphy at The Bridge House and that was it.

Bauhaus worldwide 7" releases, greatest band to plug into electric.🖤🎶🎸🎤🥁😉
And this is how I started today 😎
Thank you so much - I spent most of my youth in the Hoe Street shop, mostly buying second hand records due to my lack of funds. It was home from home....I've moved away now but was soooo pleased to discover your fb page. Wishing you all good things for the future.
Oh bugger, I've found this a year too late! Loved that record shop, weird little place, memorable purchases were singles by the Cult Maniax. Lead singer's now town crier for the very town he berated!
