OPEN CALL EXHIBITION
CONCEAL/REVEAL

We are very pleased to have received two submissions to our open call from talented Somerset artist Sian Martin.
The textile work pictured is titled 'Process'. Here are some words that Sian has written about this work, 'Repetitive and rhythmical stitching to celebrate a single stage that reveals a vital stage in the process of making a tailored garment. The temporary tailor’s tacking stitch was devised to accurately mark lines through two or more layers of fabric: an important stage in making a sculpted fabric surface.'

Follow to see more of her fantastic work.

You don't have to be an established artist to submit work to our September Open Call Exhibition. We are accepting submissions up until the 19th June 2026. We are happy to receive work of all media; 2D, 3D, sculpture, ceramics, stone work, metal work.

We have been enjoying your submissions for our Conceal/Reveal Open Call exhibition.

Dorset based Landscape Painter and Artist, Jessica Gale has submitted this beautiful oil painting inspired by the ebb and flow of the River Thames.

''The shifting tide becomes a quiet framework for concealment and revelation, alternately exposing and obscuring the riverbed and what lies beneath. Intricate patterns in the mud, shaped by the movement of water, hold a strange beauty - despite the knowledge that they are laced with pollution and debris.''

Follow .gale.art to see more examples of her beautiful work.

Conceal: to hide; to not allow something to be seen or known; to keep secret; to place out of sight.

Reveal: to make known or show something that was previously hidden;
to allow something that was previously unseen to be seen.

The theme for our Open Call Exhibition is deliberately general, and could lead in many directions. Some of these might explore ideas of light and dark, illumination and shadow, reflections and refractions, transformations and inversions and the interplay between these ideas. You might be interested by viewpoints and perspectives, the visible and the invisible or by how different media and materials exploit, highlight, layer or erase. The theme
might also suggest relationships between objects or people, truth, honesty, deception and half truth and the blurred areas in between; what is known and/or unknown, what is seen and/or unseen, what is expressed/unexpressed.

Our current exhibition also provides the opportunity to see examples of Millfield student artwork.
Our art students were given a brief to respond to some of the surrealist artwork exhibited in the show through their own art, music, movement and poetry.
Our lovely A Level Photography students created some beautiful cyanotype work and put this reel together talking about their response, thoughts and feelings to the exhibition work and theme of surrealism.
