Join artist James Thompson for a free, hands‑on, clay workshop celebrating the final day of On Lost Ground at GLOAM

For this workshop, James will support participants produce a series of new artifacts in clay. It will be an opportunity to share knowledge of GLOAM and nearby sites. We’ll take sections of clay and make clay press moulds from architectural fragments around the area. The idea is to come together and share memories – maybe of GLOAM, maybe of other art spaces, maybe industrial histories. It’s about sharing while making, building a multi perspective sense of place

On Lost Ground, Thompson’s debut solo exhibition at the gallery, brings together a new body of site-specific sculpture and a live architectural sound intervention that responds to GLOAM’s layered history as an industrial site, DIY music venue, and artist-led space, as well as the ongoing transformation of Castlegate in Sheffield’s City Centre.

Developed through casting, excavation, and architectural listening, the works draw connections between artist-led spaces, changing land use, and traces of urban transformation. The installation includes casts of S1 Artspace’s new premises in a former bank, a rammed-earth work made from material excavated during the Castlegate archaeological dig, and a live sound installation that amplifies vibrations travelling through GLOAM’s structure.

On Lost Ground explores how buildings accumulate histories and how ground retains traces of the past while carrying shifting values and potential.

Thank you to everyone that came to ‘Apotropaics’ by The Birley the exhibition is now closed ✨

Cialfi’s paintings are derived from observation. She enjoys the process of finding a balance between loose figuration and abstraction, often spilling into each other in different degrees across both paintings and sculptures. She is interested in the space in between: between abstraction and figuration, where they coexist, but also in what is neither fully figurative nor fully abstract; between inside and outside; between the seen and the unseen, the remembered and the imagined.

Later in this programme GLOAM will be travelling over to The Birley for the second half of the exchange, announcements coming soon.

We would like to thank The Birley and all the artists for partnering with us for this year’s exchange, we are excited to come see you in Preston.

Tracy Hill combines drawing, print and installation to explore the possibilities of linking art and science to reveal our fragile relationship with global living systems, visualising the (in)visible. The intersection between our sensory, aesthetic and digital worlds is where Hill situates her art works: a hybrid space where a geological understanding of the land informs an embodied experience of the energy contained within it.

Rob Mullender-Ross works with sound, sculpture, performance and video and is interested in how rituals articulated through or constitutive of sound, sociality, moving image, and objects, and can be considered (to paraphrase the anthropologist Alfred Gell) as agents of enchantment.

Rob is also the director of The Birley Artists Studios and gallery and co-curated this exhibition.

Jayne Simpson’s paintings, often bodily, entwine figurativeness with gestural, abstract layering of brushwork. The colours, and levels of opacity and transparency are metaphors in the passing of time, the brushwork reflects experiences we seek to hide or forget and those we need to unarchive and return to.

Heather Ross has a multi-disciplinary practice, as a solo artist and as part of the collaborative duo ‘Artist A & Artist B’ (with Dr. Jackie Haynes). Her work is often in dialogue with historical and archival material, which is edited and re-worked using re-construction and repetition, and/or translated into new materials and forms. She creates scenarios through which details of her subjects can be scrutinised, often seeking to generate a more embodied experience with a distanced subject.

Anthony Padgett is a ‘post contemporary’ artist, dance teacher, event planner, art project manager. A variety of forms - painting, sculpture, performance, dance, text and publishing. A variety of styles - representational, abstract, found objects, printed text, performance. A variety of materials - oil on canvas, stone, bronze, paper, the body, concepts. Themes include Art Categorisation Systems, Artist Unionisation, Computer Manufacturing, Swing dance & Rock n Roll.
