Bloc Projects is a contemporary arts organisation based in the centre of Sheffield, UK.

Bloc Projects presents and commissions contemporary art exhibitions, events, residencies, exchange projects and educational activity in our gallery and courtyard. Established in 2002, the organisation provides a platform for early-mid career artists to develop new work and present work to new audiences. Our programme encourages experimentation and invites critical dialogue among artists and audien

ces. Throughout its history Bloc Projects has supported artists and artist groups from across the UK and Europe working in a wide range of media, delivered partnerships projects with organisations such as Compass Live Art, Sheffield Fringe and Sensoria Festival, and been a long term member of the Art Sheffield Consortium. The gallery is a tenant of Bloc Studios, a partner organisation operating independently both financially and legally. We are delighted to introduce our first artist featured in When Things Fail to Cohere: Members Show 2026 is Tse Ngo Chun! ⁠
⁠
Ngo Chun Phoenix Tse is a Hong Kong born artist living and working in London. His practice works with moving image, text, installation, and performance, critically engaging with the historiography of decolonisation, the production of technological and cinematic images, and the hauntology of diasporic experience.⁠
⁠
His works submitted for this year's show include — ⁠
No Direction Home, Blowin’ in the Wind (2024), a single-channel video installation pairing a domestic fan with a TV monitor, reflecting on dislocation, memory, and the ambiguity of belonging. Plum, cherry, and peach blossoms: each rich with distinct cultural meaning in East Asian traditions, appear throughout the film, but the artist confesses uncertainty in naming them. This hesitation becomes a quiet rupture: a sense of inherited distance from one’s own heritage, set against the unfamiliarity of a new land.⁠
⁠
we are here (somewhere else) (2026), a two-channel video installation examining the relationship between navigation and infrastructure. Developed from footage recorded during a journey through the Eurotunnel, the work begins with a minor technical inconsistency: the vehicle’s GPS interface displays the journey as taking place on the surface of the sea, omitting the tunnel entirely. The work considers how technical images reorganise spatial experience, replacing the physical structures. What remains is a system that registers position without revealing the conditions that make that position possible.⁠

In their shared ambiguity, the works collectively invite a kind of disquieting contemplation.⁠

Bloc Projects are looking for volunteers this Summer to help with Front of House and Events. Volunteers can gain valuable experience in this forward facing position where you will meet artists and industry professionals.

Required:
11am - 5pm, 1 day per week for 6 weeks, either Wednesday or Friday

You will receive:
Experience in gallery operations
Meet industry professionals and networks
Skills and reference for CV
1 year full access to Bloc Projects Membership Scheme and events

Bloc Projects is delighted to introduce our new Members Edit initiative, where limited and special edition works by artists within our Membership are presented and sold in our reception space. ⁠
⁠
Relief, our second Members Edit, showcases new work by Victoria Sharples (). Her series of sculptural reliefs draw on the spatial and symbolic languages of funerary architecture—altarpieces, tombs, votives, and temples. The collection foregrounds the structural relationship between the body and architecture, interior and exterior, support and surface.⁠
⁠
The works build on Sharples' recent projects, Heap (2025), which featured inverted reliefs cast from the surface of an ancestor’s headstone, and their solo exhibition Cut, Gutter, Section (Threshold, 2026), which explored planar and volumetric structures across anatomical and architectural registers. For Bloc Projects, this architectonic approach continues through the production of composite forms in which support and surface are co-constitutive. Here, Victoria attends to Carlo Scarpa’s premise of cladding, where the underlying structure and façade are inseparable.⁠

Victoria Sharples is an artist, researcher & curator based in Sheffield. The works produced as part of their practice often take the form of site-specific sculptures, time-sensitive performances, and composite/architectural arrangements. For the past few years, they have been attentive to the ‘content’ and ‘container’ of sculptural forms, fabricating skin and shell-like surfaces that hold together positive–negative space. The processes applied are archaeological and autopsical, performing spatio-temporal dissections of site, architecture and body.

When Things Fail to Cohere brings together four artists working across sculpture, installation, moving image, print and text to explore different states of uncertainty: the fear of and yearning for power; the freedom and struggle of the q***r body; the drifting vo**ur; and those who have lost their way. In their shared ambiguity, the works collectively invite a kind of disquieting contemplation.⁠

Alana Lake’s (.studio) q***r minimalist sculptures refer to the force and violence that belie structures of power. Similarly emphasising material realities, Lucy Marriott () creates mythical flesh-like forms with rubber tubes and rose thorns that play out the lived experiences of q***r bodies. Romane Courdacher () assembles photographs, sounds and found objects to unexpectedly conjure a spectral presence. And by skewing our visual perception, Ngo Chun Tse’s () video installation is an uncanny reflection on movement and displacement. Keenly destabilising, When Things Fail to Cohere considers how we navigate and position the social realities that shape our lives.⁠

This year's four artists were selected by Hong Kong-born artist Jun Rui Lo (). Currently based in Manchester, Jun Rui makes and curates with an interest in identity politics and the aesthetics of ambiguity. Rooted in their gender nonconformity and diasporic experience, their practice explores the fluidity and freedom of identity while giving form to feelings of melancholy and alienation.

Design for Spaceships #1 is artist Emma Bolland's solo showcase of their works on paper currently exhibiting at our reception space 🌌 ⁠

The works for Designs for Spaceships #1 are selected from a large body of collages, drawings, and assemblages produced and used by the artist as ‘objects to think with’. Using found images, drawing, papers, pure mineral pigments, stationery and metal, these small works operate as satellites and moonlets orbiting around and through larger, ‘public’ works. ⁠

This showcase brings seven of these objects out of the plan chest and into the light. Limited edition giclee prints are available on request. It will run until Fri 19 June at our reception space. For 17 - 19 June only, please ring our gallery bell for access.

Emma Bolland is an interdisciplinary artist and writer. They approach their practice with speculative, sci-fi sensibilities. Drawing on diverse histories such as those of Constructivism, the visual practices of theosophy, and astronomy, they often use materials that also suggest magical and metaphysical properties. Their work is physically and conceptually informed by their physical and mental disabilities but is not about them.⁠

What started as drawing and making together in their home/studio during the 2020 lockdown has grown into a wider art club, bringing children, parents and carers into shared processes of making through drawing, digital print and textiles. ⁠

We will be changing our opening hours for our own curated exhibitions. We will now be open Wed-Sat, 11am-5pm. ⁠
