Before the railway gets moving, Grosmont MPD is already quietly going about its business.

Five steam locomotives out in the yard, each with its own character. No. 29 and "Repton" are being brought to life, while No. 44806 is being coaled ready to head out and get to work.

There’s plenty of colour too, from the different shades of green to a splash of maroon and black, with a sneaky glimpse of our bright red one-hundred-year-old steam crane in the background.

Just another day beginning at Grosmont.

Why not see for yourself what happens behind the scenes at Grosmont Motive Power Depot with our guided engine shed tours. Spaces still available for dates in September & October:

Did you know the NYMR is a registered charity?

If you're a UK taxpayer, ticking the Gift Aid box on your Donation Fare really is worth doing. It doesn't cost you a penny more, but it means we can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you give, straight from the Government. So your £10 becomes £12.50 for the charity, just like that.

It all goes towards keeping the engines running, the tracks maintained and the heritage of the line alive for years to come. All it takes is a quick tick and a note that you pay UK tax, we handle everything else.

Thank you for electing to Gift Aid your Donation Fare.

Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at Grosmont? Our Shed Tours give you the chance to find out.

Available on select Mondays throughout the 2026 season, these tours take you into the Motive Power Depot, where our team maintains and restores the locomotives that keep the NYMR running. You'll head along the foot tunnel to the depot, see the work up close, and have the chance to take a few photographs along the way.

Tours start at 1.30pm and last a minimum of two hours. Tickets are £15 per adult (16+) and £7.50 per child (10 to 15) or carer, with a £1.50 booking fee per booking.

Book your place and see the engineering that keeps our locomotives on the line. https://moorsline.co.uk/1mEoB

Raise a glass to something a little different aboard our North Yorkshire Pullman on 16 September.

We've teamed up with Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery for a whisky tasting experience. Enjoy a delicious two course meal on the outward journey from Grosmont to Pickering, then settle in for a curated whisky selection and handmade chocolates on your return through the North York Moors.

Choose from Standard Seating, First Class, or a Private Coupe for up to four, with an optional drinks package. Every booking also includes complimentary travel on our standard services the same day.

Our Pullman services book up quickly, so early booking is recommended.

You may spot a rather special train departing from Grosmont for Pickering later today, as two members of the NYMR family are celebrating a very special occasion.

Our Driver & Fitter, Bungle, and Loco Cleaner & Pullman Steward, Zeta, are getting married!

From everyone at the NYMR, we’d like to wish them both an absolutely wonderful wedding day and a long, happy life together.

Congratulations, Bungle and Zeta!
