We are pleased to announce Northern Horse will join us this year at Malton Roman Festival V!

This national group of history re-enactors will bring the Ala Augusta Prima Gallorum along to Delgovicia Fort. They will display drills in training and show their expertise and skill in battle when supporting a Legion.

Displays will be at 12:30 and 3:30pm, followed by a brief up close interaction to the soldier and his horse.

Titled 'Imagined Geographies and First Encounters,' Chris Needham will be exploring the journeys of Captain James Cook in a lecture next month.

Journals and diaries offer fascinating insights into the past, with those of explorers sparking profound questions when they returned from distant voyages.

This lecture focuses on the exploration of the then unknown parts of the world and outlines some first encounters between Cook and indigenous communities across the Pacific.

It reflects how this influenced geography, literature, and even children’s games, shaping perceptions of the wider world.

The lecture will commence at 7 pm on Thursday 16th July in the Assembly Rooms.

Do you want to learn more about eighteenth century Malton and how it developed into a prospering market town?

Join us on our Georgian Boom Time town tour on 4th July!

We will consider the earlier layout of medieval Malton, before exploring how it developed into a Georgian market town, which became a prosperous regional market centre for nearly three centuries.

We will also discuss the people who made Malton grow into the town we know today, including statesmen, racehorse trainers, and artists, whose talents have contributed to the record of the town’s rich history.

📍The tour will commence outside Malton Museum at 11 am on Saturday 4th July.

Do you want to immerse yourself in Roman life?

Our re-enactment village and living history area promises to be at the heart of Malton Roman Festival V!

We will welcome back many familiar faces, including The Longthorpe Legion , Magister Militum , Eburakon, Legio VI Victrix, Eboracum, SylvanKin, and the Brigantes of Wincobank Hill, who will bring Roman Britannia to life through their authentic equipment and shared passion for Roman history.

Across the encampments, military displays will exhibit the changes in military equipment and Roman life throughout 400 years of occupation.

Also, Lena the Aerialist will re-create Roman entertainment with some breathtaking aerial performances, and artisans will demonstrate craftsmanship and skills of daily Roman life.

These groups live and breathe life in the ‘Legion’ of Roman Britannia, their equipment is as correct as current scholarship allows, and they will happily chat about any aspect of Roman life.

Next week, shepherdess, spinner, and wool-crafter, Sue Wiles, will be joining us for our next summer lecture!

Titled 'The Life of a Wool-crafter', Sue will discuss how she got into the trade and the importance of keeping an old tradition alive in a world of mass production and synthetics.

As well as discussing her own experience, she will talk about the history of this lifestyle.

The lecture will commence at 7 pm on 18th June in the Assembly Rooms, with access through the museum.
