From corn stooks to haystacks, Flora Twort (1893-1985) left many sketches of the countryside at harvest time. Here, the simple background with its blue-purple wash emphasises the height of the haystack all the more.

'Figure sketchbook, keep' reads a note in Flora Twort's (1893-1985) handwriting. We're glad she did. Opening the volume reveals drawings such as this figure study of a girl reading, captured with the deft economy of line that characterises her sketches.
