✨ Back to the Test Valley ✨

On 15th June I'll be demonstrating at Test Valley Turners. They've been going since 1993 with the simple aim of promoting the art and craft of woodturning and giving turners a place to meet and share ideas.

They meet at Longstock Village Hall near Stockbridge in Hampshire, which is about as pleasant a setting for a turning club as you could ask for. It's worth knowing that they cap their membership at 55 to keep things relatively intimate, which I think says something good about the kind of evenings they run.

If you're in the Hampshire area and looking for a club with a strong programme and a welcoming feel, Test Valley would be worth a look.

More about the club:

Test Valley Turners are pleased to welcome a new demonstrator to Longstock Village Hall on Monday 18th May from 19.00Al Brooks is a long-time member of our neighbouring club, Dorset Wood turners. He is planning to turn a three-part bell-shaped salt shaker, in the style of, and with the permission of...

🪵 Tomorrow: Remote Demo for West Riding Woodturners 🪵

Tomorrow evening I'll be presenting an Interactive Remote Demonstration for West Riding Woodturners in Eldwick, near Bingley. Seven cameras, 1080p, and hopefully some decent turning to go with it.

If you're a member, I'll see you on screen. If you're nearby and curious about the club, they always welcome visitors at their monthly meetings.

More info:

Each month we will show a woodturning video that may interest you. It can be made by you. Made at a club demonstration or from U Tube. If you have any suggestions drop us a message in the blog contact. Our archive of videos can be seen on the video page This is your link to

May is done. The workshop smells of freshly cut cherry and the bin is full of shavings. A good month.

I finished seven pieces this month, scrapped two, and set one aside to rethink. That ratio feels about right. If everything you make turns out perfectly, you are probably not pushing yourself hard enough.

June brings longer days and drier wood. What are you planning to make?

There's a moment in every turner's development when the tool collection starts growing faster than the skills to use them. I've been there. Most of us have.

Woodturning360 has been running long enough now that I can see patterns. Members who stay tend to have one thing in common: they share their work, even when they are not happy with it.

The act of showing something unfinished or imperfect to a supportive group is where the real learning happens. Feedback is not criticism. It is other people lending you their eyes.

If you have been thinking about joining, the door is open. No minimum skill level. Just a willingness to learn and share.
