This photograph was taken at an annual camp of the 6th (Perthshire) Battalion, The Black Watch, likely in 1911. This was a Volunteer battalion, and the men were required to complete a set number of drills during the year to attend the camp – which lasted around two weeks and was often treated as a holiday.

The 6th Battalion included an Irish section, originally formed of volunteers based in Belfast and Dublin who had been attracted to join The Black Watch after visiting Perthshire. They completed their training in Ireland and made the journey to Scotland to enjoy the annual gathering. Many Irish soldiers would later serve in the 6th Battalion during the First World War.

For this month’s Explore Your Archive theme ‘Back to School’ we’re sharing this photograph of Robert Hamilton Dundas – a classical scholar from Edinburgh who served with The Black Watch during the First World War. Dundas taught classics at the University of Liverpool and then became a professor of Greek history at Christ Church College, University of Oxford. When war broke out in 1914, he took a commission to serve with The Black Watch and fought with the 2nd Battalion in Mesopotamia (now Iraq) where he was wounded. He later worked as a military censor and was mentioned in despatches twice during the First World War.

Dundas’ career in academia continued for many years after the war, and his visitor’s book at Christ Church was signed by Albert Einstein in 1931.

Due to funding from the Friends of The Black Watch, we were able to get this historic memoir successfully conserved. This memoir, handwritten by Private John Simpson of the 42nd Royal Highlanders, dates back to 1795-1801 and offers rare insights into the personal experiences of a Private soldier. The volume contains detailed accounts of troop movements, daily life, and significant events across the West Indies, Mediterranean, and Egypt, including a mention of the Battle of Alexandria.

We have very few 18th-century records in our collection, especially those that provide such personal perspectives. Unfortunately, this invaluable piece of history had become too fragile to handle, placing it at significant risk of further damage. Thanks to the expert conservation work by Riley, Dunn & Wilson, the memoir has now been carefully restored, allowing researchers and historians to access its contents once again.

This remarkable conservation was made possible by the Friends of The Black Watch, a group dedicated to preserving the legacy of The Black Watch Regiment. Through membership subscriptions and events, the Friends help fund special projects and exhibitions, ensuring that vital pieces of history like this memoir are protected for future generations.

By becoming a Friend, you can support the continued growth and preservation efforts at The Black Watch Castle and Museum. Join a vibrant community and enjoy exclusive benefits, all while contributing to the protection of our rich heritage. For more information, visit our website: https://bit.ly/3B7sWkI

Eighty years ago today, the 51st Highland Division was stationed in St-Valery-en-Caux, returning to the town four years after approximately 11,000 men from the Division were captured there and taken as Prisoners of War in June 1940.

Arriving on the 2nd of September 1944, headquarters were set up in some of the same buildings that had been used four years earlier. Although the 51st had been reformed with new personnel after 1940, some remembered the events of the surrender including its Commanding Officer Thomas Gordon Rennie – seen here receiving flower garlands from a group of local children.

Rennie had been captured at St-Valery, but escaped during the march into Germany. He gave a speech in the town on the 3rd of September 1944, which also marked five years since the outbreak of the war.

Here is a pair of postcards belonging to Black Watch officer McCulloch Christison, dating from the First World War. Black Watch greeting cards and postcards were often sent by soldiers stationed outside of Scotland and abroad during the early twentieth century, and these examples show the sense of pride they would have felt in their Scottish and Regimental identity.

Christison was badly wounded during the First World War and as a result posted to the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion. He probably received these postcard while stationed in Ireland with the 3rd Battalion. After the war, he was awarded an MBE and was a member of the London Branch of The Black Watch Association for the rest of his life.

Here is a photograph of ‘S’ Company, 7th Battalion, The Black Watch in Southwold, Suffolk, taken in May 1944. This was at the end of a period of training in England for the Normandy Landings, which began towards the end of 1943.

The officers seated in the centre of the front row (left to right) are Lieutenant Bob Hunter, Lieutenant Ian Donaldson, Captain Henry Roberts, Major Thomas Landale Rollo, Captain Ian Foggie and Lieutenant H K Mitchell. Rollo was later reported as the first British officer to make the Rhine crossing, along with a party of the 7th Battalion.

This map was produced to give a visual representation of the journey taken by the 51st Highland Division across the Western Front, from their arrival on the beaches of France shortly after D-Day to the end of the Second World War. It gives an idea of the complicated route taken as they fought through Normandy to help liberate France from N**i occupation, and then pushed into Germany via Belgium and the Netherlands.

The 51st Highland Division was made up of several battalions from multiple regiments, including The Black Watch. Each individual battalion’s journey would look slightly different to the one shown on this map, which shows the general progress of the Division as a whole. The 51st Highland Division suffered 19,524 battle casualties during the North-West Europe campaign.

On display in Gallery 3 is a fragment of a French mortar shell which came to the Museum from Fort Ticonderoga in New York, USA.

It was fired by the French into the ranks of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch), who were attacking the fort (then known as Fort Carillon) in 1758. The mortar is designed to explode in the air above targets, these shells would have been effective against troops, regardless of any cover.

The Battle of Ticonderoga was part of a British plan to take control of Canada from the French, but resulted in failure as the 16,000 British troops were repelled by 4000 French defenders. The 42nd held its position while other regiments retreated, and suffered extremely heavy casualties as a result.

Come visit us to see this remarkable artefact up close and learn more about the incredible bravery and sacrifice of The Black Watch.

For Here is a photograph taken in 1940, when The Black Watch, 6th Battalion were stationed on the Isle of Wight.

The 6th battalion formed part of the 51st Highland Division and were sent to France in January, they were then moved to the 4th Division where they travelled to Belgium in May of 1940. They were successfully evacuated at Dunkirk in June, but two platoons of the 6th battalion became separated during the retreat to the coast and arrived in England early.

The Battalion reformed on the Isle of Wight and were stationed there as a front-line defence against the German invasion of Britain which was believed to be imminent.

Discover a poignant piece of history at The Black Watch Castle and Museum: Bronze Memorial Plaques.

Following World War I, the next-of-kin of all British Empire service personnel killed in action received these Bronze Memorial Plaques, also known as the "Dead Man's Penny" or "Widow's Penny" due to their resemblance to the penny coin.

Approximately 1,355,000 plaques were distributed, with 7933 given to Black Watch soldiers who lost their lives in the war. The plaques continued to be distributed until the 1930s to memorialise those who died as a result of the conflict.

The plaques were designed by sculptor Edward Carter Preston. The design incorporates an image of Britannia clutching a trident and standing beside a lion. Britannia holds an olive wreath in her outstretched left hand above the deceased's name. The rank is not included in the designation to signify that all sacrifices were equal.

Visit our WW1 gallery to see 83 of these poignant plaques on display.

When you purchase a standard ticket, we’ll upgrade it to an annual pass, allowing you to visit us and explore the rich history of The Black Watch as many times as you like throughout the year.

21/07/2024

Every few years, we conduct a collection review to ensure our items are in good condition, stored appropriately, and accurately recorded. One key task during this process is updating records to meet the standards set by organisations like ICOM and SPECTRUM. Given that many museums began collecting over a century ago, some records can be incomplete.

Conducting a collection review allows us to identify and improve these records. Recently, Ginat, our collection assistant, discovered a lovely collection of bayonets that had been accessioned as a single piece. To improve our records, each bayonet was individually catalogued, cleaned, stamps deciphered and researched, ensuring they each received the proper care and documentation.

The bayonets pictured were primarily produced in the late 19th century and used during that period and the First World War.

To see more bayonets and learn about The Black Watch's history, visit our museum. If you're interested in researching your connection to The Black Watch, you can make an appointment by emailing [email protected].

Among them is Harry Carder, who was a member of the Regimental display team. Carder was sent to France with the British Expeditionary Force in the Second World War but was reported missing after being separated from his battalion. He managed to escape the German advance by stealing a German motorcycle and boarding a ship at Dunkirk.

Returning to Britain, Carder continued to show his devotion to fitness by serving with the Army Physical Training Corps and had a long career of teaching PE to children after the War.
