New in the book shop! A selection of poetry books from who kindly hosted the launch of ‘Talk a Blue Streak’ by Lila Matsumoto last Saturday. Monitor publish some of the best poetry put there so come and check out their beautifully designed publication. Lots of other great things in stock at the moment too.

NEW EXHIBITION
We’re delighted to present a new exhibition of oil paintings by Naqsh Raj (.naqsh) at .art.books.coffee.

Raj’s practice is rooted in repetition, where mechanical and manual methods of painting come together through the slow, cumulative act of making marks. Built through patient, sustained gestures, her paintings transform the canvas into a field of rhythm, texture and subtle variation, allowing process itself to become the subject. Embracing imperfection as an essential part of making, each work reveals a quiet tension between control and chance.

Born in Quetta, Pakistan, Raj holds an MA in Visual Arts from the National College of Arts, Lahore. Alongside an international exhibition practice, she has taught in Pakistan and the UK.

Final weekend!

There’s still time to see David Crouch’s exhibition of paintings and drawings at Beam Editions in Nottingham before it closes this weekend.

Bringing together works on paper and canvas, the exhibition reflects Crouch’s attentive engagement with landscape, cultivation, observation, and everyday encounters. Rich in detail and quietly evocative, the works reward slow looking, revealing the beauty and complexity of places that are often overlooked.

Visitors familiar with David Crouch’s celebrated book The Allotment will recognise a similar sensibility here: a deep curiosity about how people inhabit, shape, and care for the environments around them. Across the exhibition, drawings and paintings capture moments of attention, memory, and connection.

If you haven’t yet visited, this is your last opportunity to experience the exhibition in person. Whether you’re interested in contemporary drawing, landscape, publishing, or simply discovering something new, we’d love to welcome you to the gallery.

When the heat ramps up, our large airy gallery space or shaded outdoor terrace are excellent places to sip an iced coffee or indulge in an affogato.

On espresso this week we have a bright, sweet and fruity coffee from Bette Buna in Ethiopia, roasted by ; a delicious washed coffee, La Gaviotas from a women’s farming association in Colombia, roasted by the legendary local roaster Michelangelo of . We’re running filter coffees from the consistently wonderful .coffee (Ocotitlan, Anaerobic washed from Mexico) and the innovative and completely delicious (Edelweiss Estate Mielado, agroforestry grown from Tanzania) which comes up beautifully on French press as well as filtered.

A home of independent ideas. When we started Beam our ambition was stock a diverse range of books from independent publishers and offer something that simply did not exist in the city. Books come in many forms and are vehicle for sharing ideas and connecting people from different times and places. Our shop is a little different as we sell books that you won’t find in mainstream booksellers. A book shop is a place of exploration and adventure, come and take your own journey. Books on: Arts and culture, environment, food, independent fiction, poetry, photography & more.

As if you didn’t know that already? Our collaborators have been serving extraordinary food for over a decade and it’s a delight and honour to make the drinks to serve alongside them. While Kim and Ania are exceptional bakers, they are also exceptional selectors. Working with regenerative farms locally and across the UK, its the exceptional quality of their ingredients that sets them apart. Big up the Small Food and all who make and grow food that is delicious organic and REAL!!!

At this time of year our building really come into its own. We have not one but two outdoor spaces. We have a terrace with just off the bakery that can seat about 15 and the massive Primary Garden which is great for kids too. Over the coming months you’ll see flowers, herbs and veg coming into bloom.
