Newport Medieval Ship Project Part of Newport Museums & Heritage Service. Found in 2002 on the banks of the Usk, this 15th century

Come and learn about this fabulous project, wonder at the skills of the shipwrights who shaped and assembled the timbers, and learn about the life and times of a medieval merchant vessel! The Friends of Newport Ship (reg charity 1105449) open the Medieval Ship Centre to visitors, free of charge. The guides will show you around our exhibitions or you can use a free audio guide narrated by Michael Sheen!

The Countdown is on. There are just two weeks left to visit the Newport Medieval Ship before the end of our visitor season. Whether you join a guided tour with the Friends of the Ship or explore independently with our audio guides narrated by Michael Sheen and Rhys ap William, there’s plenty to discover, including new family trails, medieval costumes and conserved ship timbers.

🐋 Did you know?

The Newport Medieval Ship was one of the great merchant vessels of its time. Ships like this were the largest, most complex and most expensive machines of the medieval world, making them both valuable investments and powerful status symbols.

A crew of around 40 sailors and 20 merchants would have needed huge amounts of food and fresh water. Even on a two-week voyage, the weight of the people and their provisions could total almost 12.5 tonnes. But that was just the beginning. Archaeologists estimate the ship could have carried up to 174.5 tonnes of cargo. That's roughly the weight of a blue whale, the largest animal on Earth. Byddai criw o tua 40 o forwyr ac 20 masnachwr wedi bod angen llawer iawn o fwyd a dŵr croyw. Hyd yn oed ar fordaith bythefnos, gallai pwysau'r bobl a'u darpariaethau gyfanswm o bron i 12.5 tunnell.

🛶 Did you know?

The Newport Medieval Ship may have had different areas for different jobs, just like modern ships. Archaeologists found a variety of food remains in the bow (front) of the vessel, suggesting this could have been where the crew prepared or ate their meals. Meanwhile, grains, millet and w**d seeds were discovered in the stern (rear), hinting that livestock may have been kept there, with the plants used as feed or bedding.

These tiny discoveries help us build a picture of everyday life on board more than 500 years ago. Pop along on Fridays and Saturdays until the 31st October to find out more interesting facts and stories about our medieval ship.

Step back in time at the Newport Medieval Ship summer fayre!

Enjoy a day packed with history, hands-on fun and family-friendly activities.

From craft workshops and demonstrations to family activities, there will be lots to see and do throughout the day.

Refreshments will be on sale, and visitors can also take a look around the ship centre to learn more about the history of what has been described as the world’s largest 3D jigsaw puzzle.

Best of all, it’s FREE to enter!

The Newport Medieval Ship warehouse is open every Friday and Saturday from 10:30am–4pm, offering the chance to get up close to one of the most important surviving medieval ships in Europe and discover the remarkable story of Newport's maritime past.

And don't forget our annual Medieval Summer Fayre on Saturday 25 July (10am–4pm)! Enjoy sea shanties, live musical performances, family activities, hands-on demonstrations, crafts, tours and plenty to see and do throughout the day – with FREE entry.
