Highclere Castle Home of the 8th Earl & Countess of Carnarvon and the film location of Downton Abbey Highclere Castle has been home to the Carnarvon family since 1679.

Built on an ancient site, the original house was recorded in the Domesday Book. The present day Castle was designed in 1842 by Sir Charles Barry, the architect also responsible for building the Houses of Parliament in Westminster. The Castle’s history also includes a fascinating connection with ancient Egypt, as the 5th Earl, with Howard Carter, discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings in 1922. The Castle houses an exhibition that commemorates this historic event, including some rare antiquities from the 5th Earl's earlier Egyptian excavations. We welcome many visitors each year to view the Castle, the Egyptian Exhibition and the surrounding Grounds and Gardens. This unique setting is also available for private events, corporate events and film locations. We are open on set dates throughout the year. Rainbows🌈are long considered magical links between this and other worlds - perhaps they are bridges…full of wondrous hope🫶🏼

Please find here a link to our book club 📖with the late Jeffrey Archer - it is full of joy and I am sure wherever he now is will be improved for his skills as raconteur and story teller 📚

Whilst our book clubs (which are both in person and streamed)are normally just for Friends of Highclere it seemed very right to share 💫

There is a certain type of magic in fresh air 🌬️, beautiful architecture 🏰, history, wellington boots, muddy paw prints 🐾 and autumnal rides through the landscape 🐴🤎

Jeffrey Archer led such a rich and colourful life, he was a master story teller and it was an honour to spend a morning with him last week. Wherever he has left us for, may it be filled with good restaurants and good company 🤍 .

Recording this podcast was such fun and I hope you enjoy it.

We also recorded a Book Club , which are normally reserved for Friends of Highclere . We felt this one should be open to everyone who enjoyed his books 📖, so it is free to watch in full . No login or membership is needed 🥰

Like many of you I just could not believe it when I heard the news that Jeffrey Archer had died. Above all my thoughts are with his wife Mary, his sons and family.

I had just spent the most convivial morning at Jeffrey’s beautiful home, during which we recorded a podcast and filmed a book club.

Despite his extraordinary success, he was always keen to promote his latest book, in this case ‘Adam and Eve’ and as he said, his final book.

In fact we had such an entertaining morning he was late for lunch! We were debating which restaurant he should go to and as he set off, we decided the Wolseley was a lovely choice .

He was and will probably remain one of the most successful authors in the world , having sold over 300 million books.

He was kindly discussing my own career as an author and I have been mulling over this suggestions….

Extraordinarily, his last book is published today - he leaves us a great story telling legacy.

Rest in peace 🕊️
