Today is the very last day to visit ‘Chawan’ by Dai Ichi Arts Ltd. What a very special show and we are absolutely honoured to have been chosen as a venue for this very special exhibition, which will stay in our memory for a very long time ✨

Dai Ichi Arts is pleased to present its inaugural summer exhibition of contemporary Japanese ceramics in London, featuring 50 tea bowls by leading Japanese ceramic artists. The exhibition highlights the remarkable breadth and expressive potential of contemporary ceramic practice from Japan through the tea bowl archetype.

If you haven’t yet visited the ‘Chawan’ exhibition of Japanese ceramic tea bowls, we thoroughly recommend to pop by while you can! Open daily all through the bank holiday weekend until Tuesday.

The curator of this impressive showcase, Kristie Liu, is incredibly knowledgeable about the art of the ancient Japanese tea ceremony and the ceramic tea bowls themselves, all represented as individual works of art.

We popped by today and it was a truly special experience walking into our gallery space that Kristie has completely transformed to complement these very sought-after collectables pieces.

About the exhibition: Dai Ichi Arts Ltd is pleased to present an exhibition dedicated to the tea bowl (茶碗,
Chawan), one of the most revered objects in the history of ceramics and the Japanese tea ceremony. During the Edo period, tea bowls were especially prized by the samurai class, who regarded them not simply as utensils but as vessels of cultural and aesthetic significance.

The culture of tea, or chanoyu (茶の湯), developed over six centuries ago, shaped by elite Samurai life during the Edo Period. At its core is the tea bowl, the point of direct physical and sensory contact. It is held, turned, and contemplated in the hands, its weight, texture, and warmth. experienced before the first sip. Each chawan connects maker, user, and environment in a
continuous exchange in every aspect of its form: from the Mikomi (見込み, interior) to the Shomen (正面, true face), each aspect showcases a new element to meditate upon.
Over time the chawan’s character deepens, encouraging sustained attention. Traditional tea bowls are designed to heighten the senses. In the tea room, subdued lighting and minimal interiors reduce visual
distraction, drawing attention to touch, sound, space, and the objects within it. The tea bowl becomes central to the creation of this multisensorial experience and what can be imagined as a totalized work of art.

New York based Dai Ichi Arts is deeply grateful to each and everyone who have visited their first exhibition in the United Kingdom, from near and far. The exhibition is on view at the 67 York Street Gallery, Marylebone, until 1 September, and you are warmly invited to visit and discover this unique curated selection of contemporary Japanese tea bowls. 

CHAWAN: 50 tea bowls by contemporary Japanese ceramic makers

This summer exhibition places emphasis on the tea bowl through contemporary ceramic expression, encouraging engagement with tea bowls not just as subtle, restrained objects, but also as autonomous and unique works of art, introducing contemporary interpretations, expressions and vitality into the tea context.

Gallery artist Goto Hideki is a celebrated contemporary ceramic artist based in Tajimi City. His works meditate upon the origin of pottery in Japan, inherently a volcanic island connected to the sea: He reflects on the grandness of oceanic forms conjured by natural forces. The large waves that crash onto cliff edges, sea foam, and riptides bubbling with power and energy. He articulates this imagery in this series, “Watatsumi 海神,” named after a deity of the sea. 

The sea god is conventionally represented in the form of a dragon: a motif associated with water in Japanese mythology. Oceanic motifs like conch shells to ribbed draconic biomorphic shapes come alive through hand-built curvilinear forms and a thick feldspathic Shino glaze. Goto’s work invokes his reverence for the sea god as a bridge between humankind and nature. 

The two tea bowls above are rested on two contemporary Kobukusa by Studio Shifuku (Studio Shifuku)

It’s going well over at the ‘Chawan’ exhibition by Dai Ichi Arts Ltd 🙌🏻

Featuring 50 contemporary tea bowls by celebrated contemporary Japanese ceramic artists, this exhibition showcases the expressive range of this singular form. These works present contemporary interpretations through both traditional and experimental forms, unconventional constructions, and innovative approaches to glaze and surface by gallery artists and more. Expanding the traditional vocabulary of the chawan, the show presents the tea bowl’s status as an objet d’art beyond tradition.

Plenty of favourites are on show (including Goto Hideki, Tsujimura Kai, Oiwa Tomoyuki, Koie Ryoji, Oishi Sayaka, Hoshino Satoru, Kawase Shinobu, Kato Mami), and it’s always a pleasure to meet some of the makers behind them.

Many of the tea bowls were accompanied by bespoke shifuku and kobusa by Kyle Whittington (Studio Shifuku).

It was nice to catch up with many tea friends.

My solo exhibition in London was a collection of everything I experienced and felt during my 1 year and 10 months there.

It’s still just one step in my journey, but I’m so grateful that I was able to make it happen.

I’ll keep growing, creating, and becoming stronger, and hopefully, one day, I’ll come back to London to have exhibitions again.

Thank you so much to everyone who supported me and everyone who came to see the exhibition. 🤍
