Currently on view as part of Rubble Core, 'Stone 24' explores the material history of a prehistoric standing stone at Avebury, through archaeological reconstruction and 3D printing.
"Stone 24 is a life-size representation of Stone 24 at Avebury, one of the standing stones within the world’s largest prehistoric henge. Known as the Blacksmith’s Stone, the stone is already a kind of reconstruction: assembled from fragments recovered from a forge and re-erected during Alexander Keiller’s restoration of the monument in the 1930s. The work began as a laser scan made during fieldwork with archaeologists before being 3D printed in recycled PETG, the same polymer used to manufacture many drinks bottles. Its bright bands of colour mark successive filament changes and interruptions during the long printing process. These stripes do not disguise the act of making. They allow printer time to appear on the surface: a different kind of duration laid across the scanned stone. Rather than offering a fixed copy of an original, I see the sculpture as one more episode in the stone’s long material history. Between archaeological reconstruction, industrial fabrication, and contemporary sculpture, Stone 24 carries forward a monument that has already passed through repair, displacement, reconstruction, and translation."
