Some photos from the Routes and Roots exhibition earlier this month.

Thank you to everyone who visited over the two weekends and for making the opening night and artist talk such inspiring events to attend and be apart of.

Very privileged to have been able to support Carl, Seun, Sharon and Timothy and hear the stories of migration, family, community and identity that feed into their work.

Thank you SET for hosting us in your amazing space in the heart of Woolwich and RoyalGreenwich for helping fund the exhibition through their Black History 365 iniative. This is just a snapshot of the talent within this borough.

Art Hub Studios x The Collective Makers have partnered with SET for a group exhibition looking at the profound impact of migration on identity

Roots & Routes looks into the profound impact of migration on identity. Inspired by “Migration Identities” by Rina Benmayor and Andor Skotnes, the group exhibition investigates how migration shapes identity across cultures, languages, and societies.

The exhibition celebrates the talent of Emerging Black Artists who have been part of the Art Hub Studios Free Studio Award in collaboration with The Collective Makers. The show will features new work by current studio award holder Oluwaseun Ademefun, alongside work by previous award holders Timothy Mpofu, Sharon Adebisi and Carl Dusu.

Some more amazing pieces by year 8 students from The John Roan School. These art workshops are part of our ongoing partnership with Young Greenwich who offer a range of brilliant free activities for young people across the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

It's always a pleasure watching the students gain confidence in their creative abilities, within the open briefs we set them. As always thanks to the artists delivering the workshops Kay and Rachael, who's ambition and experimental approach create an enriching experience for the students who take part.

This week we welcome collective 3D Women and their exhibition
Works That Never Came To Life

27 women and non-binary artists challenge traditional notions of completion and the idea of ‘the final piece’. The work shown is a collection of each artist’s initial ideas that until now have remained as preliminary sketches, thoughts, plans, diagrams, maquettes and notes in sketchbooks (we've all been there!)

Opens tomorrow!

CURATOR

The 3D women collective was born out of a need for a space for women and non-binary people in the art world. The diversity of pieces in the show demonstrates the variety of work that this category of artists are making, yet they are bound by a struggle to overcome the barriers that still exist in the art world and creative industries today. The artists are all at different stages in their careers and make art for different reasons but by stripping the work back to its first forms the potential for hierarchy is removed.

WORKSHOP
We Regret To Inform You!!!
Collaborative workshop looking at the highs & lows of application writing

This open workshop will look into all the highs and lows of applying in the arts. We want to create a space to collectively think, chat and collaboratively make around the often isolating application process.
Please bring with you any written or image-based applications you are comfortable sharing with the group. These could be applications for funding, residencies, open calls, jobs, education programmes, studios - or any other applications and portfolios related to your art practice and the work you do to support this.

A privilege to have local artists Fredrix Vermin and Helen Ashton (Aka Pat Lunch) back in the gallery for 2023, with their new show - Human Remains.

Out of a shared interest in the left behind and neglected corners of South East London, the artists presented familiar everyday sights redefined as subjects worthy of attention - Where there’s muck there’s brass.

These guys have been involved in many shows at Art Hub Studios over the years, including Gung Ho (2017), Rhubarb & Custard (2018) and METAFROLICAL (2019). If you know you know

We wrapped up May with our annual Studio Support Pledge showcase, in collaboration with This year we celebrated Sharon Adebisi and her debut exhibition Unearthed.
Sharon utilises painting as a medium to explore her experiences as a Black British woman. Her work speaks on a variety of topics exploring her identity, her Nigerian roots and the academic pressures of a Nigerian firstborn.

Opening night was a very special, a massive congratulations to Sharon for creating such an incredible body of work (alongside taking her Doctoring exams!). Much love also to Lison and Joseph from The Collective Makers for helping curate this exhibition and all the work they do in supporting emerging artists and giving them a platform.

It was also great to see past and present Studio Support Pledge Artists - and

The best thing about our Deptford gallery is seeing how each creative group uses it differently. Whether they are students, local collectives or our very own (special) studio artists - they all bring something new to the space. Being able to offer our space to all these people makes us very happy. Here's a selection of images from the first 5 shows of 2023.
Looking forward to what comes next....

Later this month, in collaboration with we present a debut solo show from Sharon Adebisi

Sharon Adebisi is a UK based artist who utilises painting as a medium to explore her experiences as a Black British woman.

Born and raised in London, Sharon studied Fine Art up until A-levels, then studied BSc Physiology and Pharmacology at University of Leicester (2017).

Her work speaks on a variety of topics exploring her identity, such as her Nigerian roots, travelling to the African continent for the first time as an adult, the academic pressures of a Nigerian firstborn, love and much more.

Her long awaited debut exhibition, which will display a mixture of her most favoured pieces across the years, will take you on a journey of her life experiences.

On the 3rd day of (our countdown to Deptford Open Studios) Christmas we meet...
Eliphas Nero O'Connor (He/Him) Studio 24, Floor 2
Born in Lewisham, Eli is of Irish heritage and enjoys soaps, operas, pumpkin spice lattes and the paradoxical nature of moral duality. When in the studio, Eli works primarily in oil and acrylic paint and lists a broad range of influences, including Caravaggio, Bacon, Hopper, Klimt, and that scene in Indiana Jones where the bad guys' faces melt off.
Eli describes his work as ‘Fuelled by Evil’, subjects being ‘fever-dream soaked phantoms, leering at the viewer from the safety of brumous shadows’. He also likes to paint dogs....Ahhhhh
Eli is an elusive guy with no insta account, so you’ll have to come to Open Studios to meet him.
