The Cadiz Gallery presents Shakti Orion’s first solo exhibition in Greenwich, SE London, from 7th April to 7th May 2017. Shakti’s work is expressed in the medium of visual art and performance, She uses the art and performance to simplify and make concrete complex realities. Shakti Orion will perform 'Black Onion' at the opening night on 7 April at an event running from 1830 to 2100.
Shakti is self-taught in fine arts and her way of painting is direct and impulsive coming from imagination and intuition, where she values emotion over technique.
She is very interested in faces as a symbol of identity in a literal and metaphorical way, her portraits tend to have a sense of movement and rawness, digging down into what lies beneath the surface, in an attempt to return to the initial honest innocence.
At the core of her work lie an insight into emotional state of mind, embodying it through the different medium of her practice.
The exhibition features paintings, photographs, collages, video, conceptual pieces and a performance work associated with the exhibition called ‘Black, Red and White Onion’ a performance of endurance, repetition and stamina that explores tangled metaphysical spaces, where both the root cause of oppression and the answer to liberation lies.
The art works on display, intertwine and move among each other creating a dance of different languages, mediums, styles and themes, all of them sharing an untreated natural freshness under Shakti’s artistic vision.
Shakti was born in Spain and has lived in London since 2006, she is a Bow Arts artist and an associate artist of Chisenhale Dance Space; she studied dance at the Trinity Laban centre, an MA in Performance at Goldsmiths College and Film making at Westminster College. in the last few years she has worked at the fringe of visual arts and dance, producing paintings, live art, video art, choreographies, documentaries, photography and performance installations. Shakti has presented her work in the UK and internationally in South Korea, Italy, Portugal and Greece.
This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Shakti’s friend Stefan Werc.
